Ok..I'm in
« on: March 08, 2005, 10:35:13 AM »
I put a Glock 23 on lay-a-way this weekend, local gun shop has them at LEO prices for active duty military. They were not sure how long it would last, so I just slapped $50 down and will pay it off in a month or so. Any recommendations on ammo or little tricks to this gun I should know about before I start shooting?
Thx,
R

(1) Clean it before your first day out to the range.

(2) Leave the copper anti-sieze on it for the first few 100 rounds

(3) I personally think it's a bad idea to change out springs or anything no matter what anyone says until you've shot it a while... especially if you're using commertial ammo.  If it doesn't have night sights, an iron front sight is nice, but not required.

(4) Enjoy it.

Thx for the info, but I have a couple of questions,
1. I do plan to clean it prior to shooting

2. Is the cooper anti-sieze in the bore to help break in the barrel? What if I clean it out and polish the bore with JB polish?

3. It doesn't have night sights (I wish) I was planning on getting some paint from 20/20 concepts to make them night sights, but what is the advantage of an iron front sight? Do the front sights on these break easily?

4. OH! I plan to enjoy it!!

Thx again,
R

(2) The copper lube/anti sieze is only on the slide.  It's not in the bore.  I really don't know it's true function except that I'm told after the first several hundred rounds it's done it's job.

#23 - HOW CRUCIAL IS IT TO LEAVE THE COPPER FACTORY LUBRICATION IN PLACE?
Glock applies the copper lubricant known as "Fel-Pro", which is an automotive anti-seize compound, to the rear underside area of the slide of all new Glocks. Word is that new Glocks should be "broken in" (200-500 rds) with this copper lubricant.

Certified Glock Armorers are told that it is permissible to remove the copper lubricant on new Glocks. However, if you do decide to remove the copper lubricant, it is advisable to clean your handgun thoroughly then lubricate it before shooting it (3 drops where indicated) with a quality product intended for firearms.

(3)The plastic front sights have a 'reputation' for popping off being drawn from certain holsters.  I never had an issue, and only replaced it because I knew about this possibility and I had $10 at a gunshow and didn't want to leave without buying something (you know how it is :))

The thing you'll love about your Glock is that it is the single easiest firearm to detail strip, ever.

I can't speak to the value of this 'trigger job', but it's handy to know how to detail strip your Glock, especially if you decide to try different trigger spring and connector options.

Thx guys!! I really appreciate the help! That trigger job looks fairly simple, I might just polish first, then if I need a lighter trigger change out to the 3.5# spring.
I may switch to some night sights as well to solve the plastic sight issue, or next time I'm at a gun show look for a metal one. I know how it is to walk out of a gun show empty handed, I hate that feeling!
Any guys out there able to switch the mag release to the right side of the gun (for left handed use)?? That is the one thing I do not like about the gun.
One more?? I was reading about the manual safety, seems there have been some unintentional discharges, but when reading about them it sounded like the operator didn't properly clear the weapon rather than it being the guns fault. Any insight on this??

Thx again for all the help!!

I am only personally aware of 1 truely accidental discharge.  It was in Canada and it was some wierd pressure on the holster and then got smacked in a wierd way.  I don't have a link.

The Glock Revised Safety Rules

(1) Keep your finger off the trigger.
(2) Keep your GD finger off the trigger.
(3) Keep your finger off the GD trigger.
(4) Keep your GD finger off the GD trigger.

The manual safety for a Glock is a quality holster.  Glocks demand trigger discipline.  It was my first gun so I've not had problems adjusting.  I can see why 1911 types don't like Glocks.  It's a slightly different way of thinking.
-------------------------------
The mag-release can not be switched; however, I am a lefty and I swear it's no big deal.  You might consider an extended slide stop lever... but I actually think it's better hitting the mag release with your trigger finger or middle finger.  Righties sometimes complain that the mag release button is countered by the gripping force of your palm... you'll see when you hold it.  I think you'll be fine with the way it is.
-----------------------------
The trigger combo's I've seen most people use
-Stock
-3.5 connector and stock trigger spring ($15).
-3.5 connector and NY1 trigger spring ($15+$5)
----------------------------
If you reload, your bigger concern about the Glock is a k-boom.  40SW has a rep, although I think some of it is overblown.  Considering the number of Glocks out there, I am personally skeptical that there is significantly more examples of this problem.

If you are intent on freaking yourself out... try this website

http://www.thegunzone.com/glock/glock-kb-faq.html

then to calm yourself down read

http://www.glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=283479

Again... Glock say don't use reloads, so I think this problem is overstated.

Thx again for all the info!! I had read a little about the kB issue and came to the conclusion that it was a non-issue for me. I don't reload anymore and when I did, I reloaded light target rounds rather heavy, hot loads.
I've had to use 'righty' guns before (decocking levers and such) andmade it work, I guess I can make do with the mag release on the wrong side of the gun!!
Have you ever used Winchester white box ammo in one? 100 rounds for $16 at wally world ould make for some fun plinking rounds.

Thx again,

I shoot 9mm

my target rounds are usually the winchester white box (WWB) or wolf.  A lot of people hate wolf, but my glock eats it.  My complaint would be that it's dirty.  But in terms of target shooting I've got no problem with it.  I can get Wolf for $8.80/100 vs. $10.48/100 for WWB.
