The most common caliber by far is .45 Colt, maybe by a factor of 3 or 4.

But I shoot .44-40 anyway.  Light loads in a .44 Magnum would probably be best from a technical perspective (gun useful for other things than just CAS.)

Hylander,

What are you IN TOO? You a competitive type? Or are you into "authenticity"?

If you're competitive by nature, go with the .357/38s. They are the most used caliber by the Top Guns in CAS.

If you are one of the authenticity minded folks then you will probably be happier with .45s. They are cool and easy to load for.

Bottom line here: Ya gotta decide wat yer wantin yerownself! Go to a mtch, ask to try some gunz. (most Cowboy shooters are more than happy let a new pard take some shots with their gunz!)

Regardless, if you really end up involved in CAS you will probably end up with a set of gunz in more than one caliber! I got a whole set of .45s and anuther set in .38

While the ol' 45 Colt may still be the most popular cartridge in CAS, it is only hanging on by the skin of it's teeth.. ;)

A couple of things are happening.  First, the speed and economy movement has really bumped up the popularity of the 38 special ammo and the guns that handle the same.  Second, the authenticity push to blackpowder and appropriate cartridges in appropriate guns has increased the use of bottlenecks, like the 44-40 and 38-40, especially in rifles.

Like Cuts said, you can't have just one.
