300 grain plinking bullets for 375H&H Mag?
« on: March 14, 2005, 04:11:36 AM »
I'm trying to find some good "plinking" bullets for practicing with the 375H&H.  What's the lowest cost 300 grainer that's of decent quality?
Thanks.

Two questions:

1) Why do your "plinking" bullets have to be 300 grains ?
It would be much cheaper to use the Hornady 220gr flat-point bullets designed for the 375 Winchester lever-action cartridge for your "plinking" rounds, and produce a SUBSTANTIAL reduction in recoil, to boot !

2) Although the 375 H&H is one of my all-time favorite rounds, I would hardly consider it for even an informal plinking round; it burns a boat-load of powder and kicks a fair amount. Why would you want to use this for plinking ?
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

Good questions. It would have been more precise to say "practice" bullets, because that's what they're for.  I want bullets that are comparable to the heavier bullets I'll use for hunting, but I don't want to practice with Swift A-Frames because of the cost.  I already have a light bullet load for reduced loads, but these bullets are for practicing with full power loads.  The nature of my practice is much like plinking, though, because much of it is off-hand and from field positions, rather than from a bench.

Hornady 300 gr RN would fit the purpose. NEI used to make a mold that held a Jacket made from 1/4" copper pipe(.375 OD) then you poured a bullet through it. Mine came out 294grs. and shot 1 1/2 " @ 100yds. Pre-heating the jacket enough to prevent wrinkles was the key to success. The copper cools rapidly and the alluminum mold bled off heat while you heated the jacket. They said to preheat them on the rim of the furnace, I used a torch and tweezers to get them hot enough.
