Best Straight-Walled cartridge to chamber in Encore barrel?
« on: March 15, 2005, 11:35:01 AM »
I am trying to decide on the Best Straight-Walled cartridge to chamber in an Encore pistol barrel for whitetail hunting.  Any thoughts?

The reason it has to be straight-walled is for use here in Michigan in our shotgun zone for deer hunting.  I am looking for something that would give the flatest trajectories, hit hard, and be accurate out to long ranges (relatively).  I know......is that all?

I am leaning towards the new .460 S&W.  Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Mark

I would have said the 45-70 with the .375Win coming on strong right behind it.  But, I'm like you, I would have to check into the .460S&W.  I know nothing about whether it's suitable in Encore or not at this point.  My measuring stick would be Mr. J D Jones at SSK. If he says (and I haven't heard) it's OK and you want all the horsepower you can carry, then I'd go with it.  If not, I'd go back to my opening picks.  I shoot them both in Contender and of course, in the Encore, you could turn up the wick some...well, I know you could w/ 45-70 anyway...not that either needs it.  Good luck with what ever you do.  Walt  :)  :)

the 460 S$W does have an advantage over the 45-70
you can shoot 454 and 45 colt out of the 460. on the down side
the ammo is hard to find and being as new as it is loading components and data is even harder to find. with the pressure you will be sure to get shorter barrel life due to flame eroding. you will not be able to shoot cast bullets out of it

the 45-70 is a lower pressure round so barrel life will be a lot longer,
lots of loading data for both jacketed and cast bullets, the loaded ammo is easer to come buy and not as expensive. but it will not shoot as flat.

I would go with the 45 -70

Lots of complaints about recoil in the Encore with the 454. What would the 460 be like

What's the felt recoil like compared to the other straight walled cartridges or compared to a neck cartridge?
