We had a problem at our barn in New Mexico with cats. A young girl brought all the kittens out and turned them loose at the stables. The young lady said they were there for mousing. I talked to the owner, reminded him that the snakes took care of the mice, we did not have a problem and did not need a bunch of cats. Barr the owner said that he did not see any problem with the cats, it would be OK to leave them there. Six months later they had gone totally wild. I started missing some laying hens that I kept at my barn. I brought it up to Barr, he said "cats don't kill chickens". Then two weeks later old Barr caught me at the barn one evening. He pulled me aside and said "those cats killed my rooster, we need to do something about them". "But we got to be quite about it so no one knows". "Rog, can you take care of this quietly". I told him I could. I took my .22 Remington pump, with a 3X9 scope on it and left it in my barn. I also had a box of .22CB caps. As the days went by when no one was there, or were busy with a noisy job, I would carefully take a shot 15 to 20 yards, right behind the ear. The CB caps were so quite no one heard the shots. In a week no more cats. When the young lady realised the cats were missing she looked up Barr and asked "what could have happened to the cats"? Old Barrs reply was "coyotes must have got them"! And they did, every last one of them.
