Author Topic: Best Pistol to Carry that shoots in the 5 ring at 100 yds (Read 1120 times)

I am looking for a gun to carry on the ranch 6.5 inch barrel maybe 7.5 inch barrel max. That will hit within the 5 ring at 100 yards. I am open to the caliber. The application will be coyotes and varmits.

Any Freedom Arms single-action or perhaps SW 629DX if you can find one. Other than that you will probably be stuck with a TC unless you went the custom single-action route. A Dan Wesson would fit the bill as well. You could trying your luck with other guns, buy sell, buy sell until you find one with your accuracy requirements.

What about the Taurus 218SS6. This is a double action revolver in .218 Bee with 6.5" bbl. I have one and I love it. My favorite load is a 70 gr Speer over 5.5 gr of Blue Dot and WSP primers. Lighter bullets are better in the velocity factor; I've just have a number of 70gr Speer bullets to use. The only set back with my 218 Bee is that I am still waiting for the scope mount to be available.

Would go with the Single Shot Challenge for what you are after, make the shot count.

Either Contender or Encore from TC would do with your choice of Caliber.

The 5 ring of what? The five rings on the targets I use vary from about 2.5" to 20" in diameter.

The S&W 629DX should keep it in 4" at 100 yards. A Dan Wesson will do that too. Some Rugers will do it, but you're in a positiion of having to test individual guns. If your Ruger doesn't do it, then you'll have to find one of the many gunsmiths that work on Ruger accuracy.

I am looking seriously at the .357 with a 6 inch barrel. The local gun shop has 2 used black hawks with 7.5 inch barrels for $225. Ummmm not a bad deal for the extra inch, but I sometime carry the gun in my pocket. I think the 7.5 inch barrel will be too big.

I would say you are definitely looking for a Dan Wesson or a Freedom Arms in a revolver. It would be a rare Ruger or S&W that would shoot as accurately as either of the afore mentioned makes. Of course there are the single shoots, but it sounds like you are looking for a revolver. The Freedom Arms are lighter and therefore easier to carry, but they are much more expensive than a DW. The DW are heavier, but easier to shoot well because of that. With the Dan Wesson you also have the option to change between different barrel lengths with the same gun. A 4" DW 357 is my favorite trail gun. You could probably get the accuracy you need with a 4" DW 357, but of course you can still get the 6" or 8" barrels if you prefer.

Ok, now I am looking at the Dan Wesson. I like the barrel option. And everyone mentioning Dan Wesson is touting the accuracy of the gun... Does anyone have a cheap Dan Wesson for sale, in .357.

There are usually a steady flow of DW's on gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com. Just pick one out. I have bought them for al little as $150, but they sually go for around $250 or more now.

dougk, If your careful, in your shopping, I'm sure you won't have trouble finding a handgun capable of your requirements. Now, about hitting with this gun at 100 yards, what are your qualifications? I'm not familiar with the coyotes in your area but, around here they're only in the weight range, of tops, 35 pounds. And usually, moving rapidly out of the area where humans are! And, by the way, most hunters won't take 100 yard shot at whitetail deer, around 90-100 pounds, average, around here. Few people I know are capable of this shot, G.B. has said that he has a lot experience at long range shots in the steel silhouette game. I'd say he would be a good source of help?

Great questions. Last season I had the fortune to take a doe and a button spike. The doe was taken at 120 yards (sitting) using a combo gun the button spike was taken at 90-100 yards while walking using the same combo within 30 seconds. After reloading.

The two coyotes here where in the 45 lb range and where chasing a deer across the field in front of the house. They where within 40 yards of the house and the shot was 60 yards ( I was in the barn close to the house). I have installed the fence on the property and know the yardage given the posts.

One of the fields is over 300 yards wide, but I would not shoot (using the pistol) over 100 yards. Running is tough but I am fortunate to have mentored by a very skilled distance marksman.

If the shots your talking about, on your previous post, are with a handgun, you already own one pistol that will shoot to the specifications you mentioned. Why not stay with that one for your holster gun?

i think that is all well and good with game. but if i see a 'yote at 250 yards out and moving and all i have is my 1911, i will try to kill him as long as i can see him and shoot safely. what's the worst that could happen, you miss? they are what i like to call "a target of opportunity". along with skunks, porcupines, red squirrels, FERAL CATS, and various other vermin.

The previous shots where with a rifle. To stress my point. I will shot if the target is within the capabilities of my skills and the firearm being used.

If I am carrying a Steyr S-9 (9mm) and see a coyote 250 yards off I will not shoot. But if I see the coyote running at 30 yards, and I am able to acquire the target, I will shoot given I am comfortable with my skills in that situation.
