Author Topic: muzzle tamer or mag-na-port new barrel (Read 775 times)

I'm getting ready to finalize an order on a 6.8 REM SPC for my contender and I am debating on whether or not to add a tamer or mag-na-port. I had a 7X30 waters w/ a muzzle tamer when they first came out. They were initailly swagged (spelling?) on. I was shooting it one day after a strange feeling when it shot, I noticed that the tamer had blown off and was nowhere to be found. Returned the barrel to t/c and they relaced it with a new barrel with the current tamer attached with the new design. My next tamer experience was with a 375 WIN which was really LOUD. So, here's the question for those more experienced than me.
On a cartridge where there is no issue with recoil, does the tamer or magnaporting increase accuracy? I see people with 223's having muzzle tamers and start to wonder if I am missing something (besides my hearing)

? Would really appreciate input from you all.

If you don't have a problem with recoil then what good is a tamer? I see them on mild recoiling barrels also, but in my opinion its more for "show" than any thing else. The only way a tamer would increase accuracy is if it made the gun easier to shoot. I don't see that happening with the mild calibers. Just my $.02. KN

I have 3 guns out of 30 something gun's ported. A BFR 500 MAG and 4 inch S&W500 and a 444 Marlin T/C Katahdin barrel. I would not have the 444 Marlin ported if it did not come from the factory that way. The only guns I have ever thought I would need porting on is the 500MAG's. And a 50BMG of course. I have a few heavy kickers but I would never consider having porting on any of them.

But if you feel you need, it go for it.

I forgot to mention I cut the tamer off my 223 barrel. Shoots just as accurate and I don't notice any more recoil. Not nearly as loud either. KN

I'd have to agree with KN and Redhawk, If you don't have to have it (read: you can stand to shoot it without brake), leave it be. I hate those d___ things. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

I do not care for them that much, but they do work and work very well with the high power rounds. the higher the power the better they work. yes they are very load but that is a trade off

Right now I have only 1 contender barrel with a muzzle break and that is my 357 jdj and it works OK to keep the muzzle climb down.

The 50 BMG and other large guns do not have a muzzle break they have a compensator. you can get them on most firearms as well.
a muzzle break has an expansion chamber to help reduce the recoil. a compensator has several baffles that the bullet and gases go trough. the gasses push against the baffles and in turn push the fire arm away from you reducing the recoil

Well you better tell all those 50 BMG manufactures that. They all call them muzzle breaks, shark gill breaks. I had two 50BMG and they came with muzzle Breaks, not compensators.

most people call the compensator a muzzle break to simplify things or they don't know any different.

if is kind of saying manga-port is the same as a muzzle break.

they both do close to the same job but they are not the same

I don't really care for the brakes on any of my barrels...just too plain loud for me. Biggest barrel is a .375 Win, and recoil is really not that bad without a brake. I can't imagine how loud the .375 would be with a brake.

Probably the biggest banger I have is the 375 JDJ. I don't have a brake on it and probably never will. Recoil is not that great, and is just a tad more than my 44mag loaded with 315gr. cast bullets.

Those pistols are loud enough without the brakes and I don't know if I could stand that short of a barrel with one.

My way of figuring, is, if I needed a brake to handle a pistol, then I need to think about getting a pistol with a little less pop. There are too many choices out there that put down the game just as well without being punishing.

Just my .02. and with inflation, that's not much.

a brake may be louder but my opinion is that it's not as big of an issue if you think about what you are doing :?
NO gun of ANY kind should EVER be fired without HEARING protection.

a lil bit of damage is no good, just the same as a lot of damage is no good.

i thought i would never want a braked firearm till i started shootin the 300 win mag in a handgun :shock: then.........i got all that horsepower with hardly any recoil compared to before the OTT shark gill muzzle brake was added.
180gr sierra gamekings at 2600fps so far outa the 18.5" barrel, including brake........and lookin to get close to 2700fps by the time i get my load finished.
