I need some opinions please!

Hey all  I am looking to buy a tree rat rifle and I would like anyones opinion on what to get and stay under $200.00 Ive had 3 10/22s so please dont even suggest a Ruger as accuracy and other problems with them, I now own a 1 month old Marlin 60 in stainless it is a very accurate rifle but the constant jamming and stove piping have drove me nuts and its only had 100 rounds thru it, I called marlin and they to clean it throughly which I have all the way to a complete tear down. So I still need a tree rat gun. This Marlin is going bye bye! Please help if you would I need suggestions. I dont want to buy another one until I can get some good recomendations. Thanks Jimmy

Get a Remington Nylon 66. Accurate, never jams and cleaning? I've had mine since the 60's and only cleaned it once. That was just on general principals. It didn't really need it. We shoot empty shotshells on end with it. My wife loves it and calls it "The Plinker". It's the only gun she wants to shoot. Get one!

Does it have to be a semi auto? I would get a bolt gun. Marlin makes accurate one as does Savage though Savage's triggers are not the greatest. I would save a few more bucks and buy a CZ they have a great rep for accuracy. Or if you cannot afford that much buy a Romanian Trainer Model 69 for under a 100 bucks, boy do they shoot mine does under a half inch at 50 yards. Henry Makes a fine accurate lever gun also.

Both offer better accuracy than a .22 out to 100 yards, and you can pick up a Savage .17 Mach2 for less than $200.00.  The main benefit, other than accuracy is the fact that the 17 grain bullets fragment upon impact.  Much safer than .22s.  Head shots on tree rats out to 100 yards, no problem at all, if you do your part.  Check out the archives here.  Joe

In a auto get a Ruger 10/22 or in a bolt action go with a Ruger 77/22.  Reason is their excellent accuracy and lack of problems.  Lawdog

Stores that have sold them are Big 5 or Dunhams. Other larger chain outfits may sell them I have heard of guys finding them at Gander Mountain. Otherwise have your Local Gun shop order you one from SOG or on of the other milsurp dealers. For the Money they are a steal. Interesting comments on the 10/22's I agree on the accuracy part, though some say theirs shoot good UNMODIFIED. I think it is more of a quality control issue more than anything. Expecially with their single actions. Jim

Get a Mossberg bolt action.  I've shot 15 or so of these rifles, and even the ones  that look like they've been to hell and back will shoot minute of squirrel at 50 yards.

Take a look at those Mod. 69  Romanians before you buy. Not much to look at, but are well built. I have two, both shoot very well. Am using CCI, long rifle hollow points. Can't wait for the weather to break to try some Aguila, or Lupau. (Have tried the aguila 60 gr. doesn't like it, but none of my other .22's shoot it either). Biggest issue with the Mod. 69 is the two stage, military type trigger. It's not that bad, just different, if you go from one rifle to another, you have to make a mental note to take up the slack, then squeeze.
 All these rifiles, that I have seen, have had good bores.

I will agree with the above post. My 69 Romanian suits my needs perfectly. If you get one let us know. WIll give you some info on scope rings that fit this gun. Jim

You didn't indicate what kind of sights you might need on this rifle.

If you are not needing a scope, and a good receiver sight would work, I would look for a Marlin 39-A. You may be able to find a good used one in your price range.

I have one with a Williams receiver sight, and it is one fine shooter. They are a bit heavy, for sure, but they do a fine job. I always liked lever action rifles.

You might look around for a good used Winchester 67-A if you're not against a single shot. These were great shooters. Lots of them weren't used all that much, just stood in a corner somewhere.

If I may say this, if you want the utmost in reliability, simplicity, and function, look for a bolt action.  I know, you have to cycle it every time, etc.  But you know what? Once you get good with a bolt action, you can become pretty efficient with it, even rivaling a semi, but in the long run a whole lot more reliable.  Often times, bolt actions can tend to be a little more accurate ( but not "always");  I have to say too, they are much easier to clean.  Just my two cents.
