Hi guys, I'm planning my next BPCR and am looking at one that has a 34"barrel, is there an advantage/dis-advantage with this length? Also what are the weight limits for competition?THANKS!!!!!

I can't give you the weight limits but a couple advantages to a longer barrel are a longer sight radius and more often than not higher velocities. There is a point of diminishing returns with barrel length but 34 in. ain't there yet. Longer barrels are also more steady in the offhand position. Again there is a point of diminishing return but 34 in. ain't it, at least for me. If competition is your aim, (pun intended) for this rifle I'd go with the 34 incher.

i have a 30 inch and its pretty darn heavy for an old man if im walking very far.. after i got a good loads, its plenty accurate.. wind and lighting (type, direction, intensity) on my open sights is the problem, not the barrel lenght.. its a full octagon... im looking into a 74 carbine 5070 for a carry gun. in theory its too light for 50 70, those that ive talked to about it that have shot it says is fine for hunting.. i guess i wont know if its good for my purpous until i shoot one.. dave.

Can tell you this, from comparing the velocity figures for the short barreled (22") 50/70 carbines to a 36" barrled rolling block, all that extra barrel length earns me about 110fps..call it 8fps per inch. Think any game would notice?

Will also have to rework some loads...some loads that work fine in the short barreled versions just run out of lube in the long barreled versions...are some bullet designs that work great in short barrels, but will need a lube-cookie for the longer ones.

When you say "competition" exactly which event(s) do you mean?

NRA sanctioned BPCR silhouette (iron sights) total weight 12#, 2 oz

NRA sanctioned BPCR silhouette (Â’scope) total weight 15#

NRA sanctioned BP Target rifle total weight 15#

Ray, Thats what I meant, in sanctioned events, I'm new at this and I may never get to one but if ever get this Pedersloppy! (thats how it shot yesterday) to shoot straight and get all the BUGS worked out I've got my sights set on a Shilo or a C.Sharps. Just didn't want to spend BIG BUCKS on a rifle that may be illegal in those events! Now all you pedersoli shooters don't take offence at my pun about those fine rifles, I've been shooting black powder m-loaders for quite a few years and own six pedersoli guns and they are FINE guns. I have also come to realize that the main reason a gun won't shoot straight is usually the NUT ON THE TRIGGER!!!!!! (alias me)?

An ammendment to my previous post; I have also come to realize that usually the reason that a BPCR will not shoot straight is because of a LOOSE NUT on the loading press!!!!!(yours truly!)
