How much should I pay?
« on: May 25, 2005, 10:49:55 AM »
:D I have been wanting an ATV for a long time. Last year dragging them deer really made me want one bad and I'm not getting any younger. I have been doing some research on them and I really like this one in  (CAMO)
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outdoor/products/modelspecs/207/specs.aspx

My questions to you guys are.
What kind of price should I expect to pay grand total (out the door)?
Does paying with cash give you much leverage?
I can take a loan and get the cash if it will help bring the price down.
I just want to get the best price I can get so I could use some pointers from you guys that have bought ATV'S before.  Thanks in advance

Dealers ususally add delivery, setup etc. on top of MSRP then they tack on sales tax and license/registration which can add up to $800/$1000 more than MSRP.  Don't pay more than MSRP out the door.  My last purchases of a new XR 400, a Honda Recon 250 and most recent an 05 Kodiak 400 4x4 were all at or slightly below MSRP out the door - that means including EVERYTHING.

P.S.  I paid cash but financing does not cost the dealer anything in fact they make money so settle for a higher price if you finance.

Last year when I bought my Bruin I paid a bit less than the MSRP to include taxes, prep and the winch and kit. I think it was maybe $200-250 less than MSRP even with every thing added. I kinda liked the camo but not enough to pay the extra bucks for it.

Buying an ATV is exactly the same as buying a car.

The dealer makes money on the front end (ATV Sale) and backend (financing and warranty).  I believe all ATV sales and F&I people are 100% commission.  I suggest you price shop them all on the internet then go in and negociate your deal with the local store.

Another option is to buy a used ATV, I have does this with great success.  The is a company in Houston that specializes in used ATVs.  If you want there info PM me.

:D Thanks for the replies, I'm still shopping around. I have called I don't know how MANY dealers and asked them "what is the best cash price I can get for the 450 kodiak 4x4 05 in camo" and none of them will give me a straight price. They all say the same thing well M.S.R.P. is $6,549 then you have taxes title and fee after fee just like azshooter stated. They all said no way to m.s.r.p out the door. I don't know why I guess the good country folks are not trying to get rich but I called a dealer up in the mountains where I hunt and he was straight with me. He said I can put you in the camo kodiak for $6,250 out the door or the camo grizzly for 6,800 out the door. This is like $1,000 cheaper than everybody else is talking about.
So now my options are.
1- Drive 4 hours one way and get what I really want for $6,250 or the green one for (probably $5,800 forgot to ask) or the grizzly for $6,800.
2- Go to my local guy and try to get the GREEN kodiak for $6,250 which is above M.S.R.P.

Get this I called my local guy and told him what I could get the camo kodiak for 4 hours away and he said well get driving because I can't even come remotely close to that.
Then the good part, he said if you buy it from him don't bring it here for service when you need to get it fixed "we won't work on it" because he is trying to put us out of business.
So I don't know what I'm going to do yet but I'll probably be driving  4 hours. (someone will be glad to fix it for me i'm sure)
I did buy a nice trailer to haul it on yesterday so I'm definitely buying one now. :P

I'm assuming you're from Maryland so this is probably to far from you, but it might be worth it.....It's about $550 less on the camo Kodiak.

2005 Kodiak 450, Red-Green-Blue, $5399.99
2005 Kodiak 450, Camo, $5699.99

This is in Corinth Mississippi.  They sell a lot of 4 wheelers.  The price above is out the door.  No tax (for out of staters), no paper work fees.

They sell Honda's as well.

http://www.yamahadiscountprices.com/yamahaatvs.htm#utility

The Kodiak 450 was what I'd decided on until I ran up on a Bombardier for considerably less.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Man thats a great deal. I wish I was a little closer to that place. I punched it in on mapquest and it's like a 10 hour drive. Thats a little to far me.
How does the taxes work if you buy from a state that has no sales tax but your does? I could go to Delaware and buy one (tax free) but would I have to pay Maryland tax to get the title?

I'm really not sure how it works in other states.  In AL and Mississippi, if you live in Alabama and go to Mississippi to buy the ATV, you don't pay any sales tax there.  Alabama has a 2 percent usage tax for the ATV.  The Mississippi dealer mails a notice to AL and AL sends you a notice of the 2 percent later.  However,......from what I understand, not all dealers do that, and if differs depending on the state the buyers from......a lot of unknowns there...I think it may have something to do with reciprocity between the states.  I do know several people who have bought ATV's in Tennessee and didn't have to pay any state tax and nothing was mailed in to AL.  Most that I know who bought in Mississippi did have to pay it.

Not much help, just enough to make it even more confusing.....

"Retail is for suckers"
___________________________________________________________
you should try www.abernathyonline.com

or

www.ritchiepowersports.com

for prices.
___________________________________________________________
I think you will get your camo Kodiak ATV from one of them for about $5200 out the door. If you want the standard colors, it will be less than $5000.00 out the door. Considering you are in maryland, it might be about 12-16 hour trip each way - so it looks like you save about $50.00 per hour, minus expenses. We took the honda prices from these places and beat our local dealers with them until one of them gave in. In the end, my buddy and I saved about $3000 over MSRP.
_________________________________________________________
This is a classic line - be prepared to hear it often during comparison shopping!!!
"If you can get one for that price, buy us one too"

We Gave them the web address and phone number and told them that they can order directly for themselves to avoid all the extra title work and prep, frieght, setup charges I'd have to add on as the middle man. - doesn't that sound ridiculous - they do it to you !!!!
_________________________________________________________
Great Line to use on dealers -
"One of these months, you'll be one quad short of your holdback quota, don't blame me!!! I'll be the one who would have been telling me friends what a great place you were to buy an ATV - or maybe not"
__________________________________________________________
Don't let them BS you about service, here'a another classic line for them.
" Are you trying to tell me that you - a yamaha dealer, wont honor a factory yamaha warranty repair? I bet yamaha would love to know about that. HMMM.....maybe your attitude is what is driving you out of business, not competetive prices."
__________________________________________________________

Dont be afriad to put your foot down about the $$$ - a dealership only makes money when they sell things - if you dont buy, they dont make $$ regardless, period. They never lose money on deals because they get incentives and other perks on the back end of their bike sales from the manufacturer. Dont feel sorry for them. It's your money.

Good Luck!!!

This is so wrong and having worked for a manufacturer before, this dealer is more than likely breaking the Yamaha franchise agreement. Vehicle franchises have requirements for all dealers to do warranty repairs no matter where it's bought. If tthey didn't, there would be zero competition among dealers. I wouldn't want this dealer working on anything anyway since he sounds unethical.

Now as a counterpoint, I ask you to consider how calling the local dealer and providing him the remote dealers price was unfair to the remote dealer. He was the guy who cooperated and provided you, over the phone with no games, a much better price. He should earn your business because he dealt with you without playing stupid dealer games and did exactly what you wanted. I know 4 hours is a little bit of a drive but I bet you believe fairness and doing business with ethical people is worth it.

I agree with you 100% BuckTrucker. I will be driving up there this Saturday a week from today to pick one up. I think I'm going to get the Green kodiak 450. it's going to cost me about $5,800 with tax and everything which is way lower then the local guys.
I never told the local guys where the good prices were I just said I can drive 4 hours and get this price. I would not tell the company name when they asked.
I basically just wanted to tell them they were ridiculously overpriced and I would not be shopping in there stores for anything.
I also knew for a fact he was full of it about not fixing the machine.
But like you said I would not take it to an unethical dealer anyway.

I took yesterday afternoon off work and spent the time checking out the following at my local dealer.

2005 Yamaha Kodiak 450 Auto. 4x4
2005 Honda FourTrax Foreman 4X4 ES
2005 Kawasaki Prairie 360 4x4
2005 Kawasaki Brute Force 650 4x4
2005 Vinson 500 4x4 Auto Limited Edition
2005 Arctic Cat 500 4x4 Automatic LE
2005 Polaris Sportsman 600 Twin 4x4

He has about 30 fenced acres with trails, hills and even a stream to traverse and after all was said and done I bought the Arctic Cat 500 LE.  I just liked the rack system, ground clearance(12"), and suspension travel.  Everything made for a much smoother, more comfortable ride.  The $6,650 price tag complete, including tax , out the door didn’t hurt at all either.  Lawdog

I buy slightly used and with cash. There eyes get big when you produce a cashiers check.. I have bought two this way. I look them over real good and decide what I think it is worth. Get a cashiers check for  less and a some cash stashed in my wallet in case I have to pay a bit more(really want it). Seem to make out pretty good this way. If no deal than my bank just re credits my account.  Be paitent. look around. Have fun. spend alittle. be happy. don't compromise. Get the one you want. You only live once.. Well maybe not. Who knows. Reincarnation.. I think I will be a dog in a family like mine. Lots of love and plenty of cats to chase.. Life is good.
