Now that I am looking to scope all my hunting handguns I need to know what power is the best for hunting? Is a 1.5x worth it, does the variable power scopes 2-7x work or is that too much power? Should I just stick with the 2x?

i have a 4x28 leap on my 41 mag sb hunter an i think its too much at the bench its not bad but in the woods its way too much for the thicket i hunt,
so im thinking of selling it an keeping an eye or for a 2x or see if i can get a nice deal for a nikon or buris 1-4 power at the gun show in a few months

Most of my hunting guns have a 2X on them or at least a variable that will go down to 2X. The 4X and up are just too hard to hold steady off hand. I do like the wider view of the 2.5X8 Leu I just picked up though. (larger eye piece) For bench or steady rest shooting the variables are nice for tighter groups. A wide angle 3X would be about perfect for hunting!

For my longer range shooting, I like the option of a higher power scope 2.5X8 or a 2X6. If I do 100 yards or less the 2X or 4X works. But the variable give you the option of lower power and higher power.

It depends on what you want to do. If you're shooting at revolver distances at deer-size game, then you can't do better than the Leupold 2x. Variables are nice for some things, though.

At the range that I would be shooting(50 yards or so) a 2x would be the max magnification I need.

I have three scoped 10" Contenders. All wear Nikon 2X scopes.

most of my handguns are scoped. 1x4to 2.5x8.I usually have a rest of some kind when I'm hunting. On my 44SBH I have a 1x4 Burris.I still use a rest when possible with it. I have a set of sightsThat fit on top of the scope rings that allow me to use iron sights for close ,fast shots.I don't know if they are still made,they are called S.O.S. .Sight Over Scope rings.
I keep my variables on the lowest power till I find a target,then ,if time and conditions allow it,I crank up the X's.My sixty year old eyes need all the help they can get.I have used a friends T/C with a 12x scope when shooting his 22-250 XP at ground hogs in a huge field.
