Added a .44 Mag to the stable
« on: March 16, 2005, 02:37:45 AM »
Hello everyone.  Drove down to visit the my parents in the Shenendoah Valley of Virginia on Monday.  Stopped by a local gun shop and walked out with a used synthetic .44 mag Handi.  It carries a Bushnell Banner 3X9X40 on Weaver see thru rings.  It looked to be in un-used condition.  I inquired about its history and it turned out to be owned by one of the employees.  He said it has only had about 40 shots through it.  He's selling that one and a wood stocked Handi in .22 Hornet.   He was trying to generate some cash to purchase an over/under.  Picked it up for $200 out the door.

I can't seem to find anything in the 2005 NEF catalog about the synthetic .44 mag being offered any longer.  So, I'm happy.  This is only the second .44 I've seen used in the past year or so and the first synthetic.

Ahhhh, my first Handi was a .44. I bought it unaware of the "cult following" that would materielize here on the net. I still have what's left of it, but it's now a .223 Ultra. Since hanging around here I've become a Handi-holic, and own two more. Congrats on your new Handi, and may the force be with you :-D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens :eek:

EVOC;

When I bought my Ultra Varmit in .223, that was my orginal idea, to get a 44 mag barrel for it. I shoot it more than the .223. And after a while, I ended up putting synthitic stocks on it to make it lighter. It now has a Leupold 6X36 straight power scope on it. I REALLY enjoy shooting it.
I think you will too. Good Shooting with it.

I really like my 44 mag,but its kind of ugly with the 6X18X50 scope I have on it for now. Very little recoil, and accurate enough for 100 yds. . When I'm hunting the bigger hogs I slip the 445 super mags. in the chamber though.   Digger

Hey Drew, I'm glad that barrel worked out for you. I didn't like the way the .243 barrel fit, so I sold it to somebody else, and I liked the cartridge so well I bought an Ultra 243 heavy barrel from Brent in Indiana. Glad I did, that rifle rocks. Anyway, good shooting to ya.  :D

Glad to read the positive remarks regarding the .44 Mag.  It is an easy cartridge to load for and from what I read, does quite well as a rifle cartridge.  I'm looking forward to getting some range time with it.

Thanks for the input guys.  Any load suggestions and other information will surely be appreciated.

I have the 44 Mag with the synthetic stock as well. It one of the most fun to shoot handi's of all. I shoot 200 grain Hornady XTP's in it so far. I also shoot 44 special rounds through it loaded with 240 grain cast bullets. These loads are really mi;d to shoot and a good small game load. I have been thinking of the 445 Super Mag ream for mine but I already have the handi in 45-70 so it would be sort of a duplicate. AH Who cares I might ream it anyway. :)
shot placement is everything.

Heck, thats what this Handi stuff is all about anyway.  Do it without rhyme or reason, just because its fun.  I'm planning to buy a .280 and already have a .30-06.  But I'm also given thought to buying a .30-06 Ultra.  Go figure.

The two most accurate cast bullet loads from my 44 are 7 or 8 grains (you choose) of Blue Dot (I actually use a Mil Surp powder that is for practical purposes Blue Dot) under any cast bullet from 200-265 grains. Gives 800-840 fps, is cheap and super accurate. The other is 24.5 grains of 1680 under a 265 grain cast bullet. Velocity is 1400ish and is scary accurate at 50 yards. I used 11.3 grains of Blue Dot pushing a 265 grain bullet at 1275 fps to kill two does with 2 seasons ago.

That 44 mag barrel i got off of NBC is great wish i could find 2 more just like it.

I want to leave this one the way it is, and have one reamed to 445 supermag, and cut another one down to 16 1/2" and also have it reamed to make a mean little brush gun. Put the youth synthetic stocks on it and a red dot scope. It sure would be one "handi" rifle. Now where can i find 2 more

I have a handi rifle in 44 mag and am trying to find a peep sight for it. Does anybody know where I can find one. Or the number for one.
