Can the .209 primer carrier be modified to accept the .25 cal. primers or will someone make some?Would the same breechplug work?

Precision rifles is making them to be shipped in March according to their website

Bubba,
Thanks for the tip.I have a Sidekick and actually find the primer carriers handier than not having one.I hope the stock breech plug works. My barrel stays pretty clean with APP but primer blow by could be better.

mrlizzzard,

After reading the above posts, I think there may be some misunderstanding. My info is that Precision Rifle is making a new Breech Plug to fit modified .25cal brass with primer, which will fit our NEF's, as Bubba posted.
They are not,as far as I know, designing a new Primer Carrier that can be used with .25cal primers for our NEF breech plugs. I wish they were,as it would surely simplify things.

Like you,I also like the Primer Carriers and find them quite handy...especially loading with cold hands while hunting.

I don't know why it wouldn't be possible to make a sleeve that would fit inside the factory Carriers to make up the difference in size between a smaller primer and the standard 209 primers. I am going to check this out and if any luck, will report back.

Also something to look for are the new Remington 209 Kleenbore primers, that are supposed to burn a cleaner than current 209's and hopefully will clean up or reduce the blowback. Busta has a thread on this item and posted about a week ago on this forum. He supplied a link,so have a look see.

This is correct above the new plug from precision eliminates the primer carrier. It is just a breech plug that the acp goes into like the encore/omega one does.   you can check it out and read about it at their site

I could easily modify the carriers to accept cut down 25 acp cases, but I think you would still have blow by fouling.  All you need for the mod is some 25 acp brass cut to the same length as the depth of the primer carriers that we now have.  Then just carefully ream out primer carrier to fit th od of 25 acp ( it currently fits 22lr) and you are set.  you stillhave the handy carrier for priming, but less blast into the charge ( that is what causes the inaccuracy according to prec rifle).  The thing is blow back will still happen, but in a lesser amount.  The one prec rifle is making is supposed to have the brass case actually fit into the breech plug thereby creating a much better seal to not allow blow back fouling gasses.  It is still unclear how we could eject the spent 25 brass with the prec rifle mod though.

jdbe,

You just simply grab ahold of it with your thumb and forefinger, it does extend out from the BP a little ways. At least that is how the Encore/Omega one works, haven't seen a NEF .25acp plug yet. Cecil must have made a prototype and didn't take a picture to show us.  I would sure like to see a pic before I buy one.

I don't have the crud ring in the huntsman like the encore and if I did I would try the New Remington 209 before I bought a differant breechplug
buy a lot of bullets and powder for the money

I bought some Black Mag 3 powder and can't believe how much easier it is to clean and remove the breach plug.  Solved all of my problems.

I was just on the PR site and the ACP conversion is for the sidekick. I presume the breechplugs are interchangeable in Huntsman and Sidekick. Seems like they got some great accuracy with it.

Yes the breech plugs are interchangeable from the huntsman to the sidekick. I have both and they end up in the water together to get cleaned and I never worry which goes where.

The new Remington 209 are the same thing just in a new package, just as Winchester came out with inline 209 primers. The only thing new ids the package :D

My 25 acp breech plug was just delivered... wish I had a digital camera at the office.  Pretty slick looking unit... takes a 7/16 socket to remove the plug.  Soonest I will be able to post a picture is Thursday or Friday... if someone else hasn't beat me to it (flying to Portland on business today).

If I buy the PR breech plug and the 25acp cases, do I need any special tools to prime the cases??  I assume you can buy the 25 acp primers at any well stocked gun store.

I believe you can make do with a Lee hand primer with the correct shell holder and small pistol primers.  If Lee ever made a Lee Loader kit for the 25acp that might be the way to go as it would make depriming a little easier than using a punch to get the fired primers out, but would be slower to do the priming.

mt_jeep,

Congrats, you are the first one I know of that has a NEF .25acp Plug. It must be the lighting in the picture, but the threaded part doesn't look large enough in diameter to fit my Huntsman. I am of the understanding that the Sidekick breech plug and the Huntsman are the same, but my Huntsmans threaded portion is nearly the same diameter as the unthreaded ring at the back. Can you take a pic of your standard plug next to your .25acp plug on a lighter background please? I think the dark background and shadows in you pic are playing tricks with my eyes. :? Please give us a report on the .25acp plug when you get a chance.

What does the plug look like when looking down into the back side of it? Is it a hollow hole the length and width of the .25acp case or is there a stem with a hole in it that the case slides over and around?

Thanks for taking time to answer these questions.

Busta,

You're suspicions were right.  That plug doesn't even come close to fitting.  I will cal Cecil tomorrow and see what the problem is... must be the wrong one, although the little plaxtic bag it came in has "NEF" marked on it (with a sharpie).

mt_jeep,

That's what I thought, but didn't want to accuse you of pulling our legs. Looks like Cecil is pulling yours, sorry to hear that. :(  I am sure it was an honest mix-up, but at your expense unfortunately. I am probably going to order one, but would like to see one first. Tell Cecil to get a pic of a NEF plug on his website if he wants to sell me one. What does that plug look like where the .25acp case slides in? Please describe or show pic.

Thanks and good luck with Cecil. Tell him you want standard threads, not that Canadian metric stuff. :-D

OK, here's the deal...

NEF has redesigned their breech plug from 7/8" threads to 5/8" threads, that's why the breech plug in the picture doesn't fit my Sidekick.  The 7/8" design is now obsolete.

My gun is new, so I called NEF and asked them if they would do a barrel exchange.  The lady I talked to put me on hold, and then came back on and said that NEF wouldn't do a barrel exchange.

For those of you still interested, I will post more pictures showing the plug in detail.

mt_jeep,

I was afraid that you were going to come back and tell me that. That is one of the reasons I waited to order the plug. I have heard that the Huntsman and Sidekick plugs were the same, as Bubba has both and his are the same. Must be they changed the plug for 2005 models. the 5/8" would be better IMO, but doesn't help any of us that have the 7/8" plugs. I bet Cecil didn't even know there was a 7/8" plug then? Did Cecil say if he would be making a 7/8" .25acp plug for the rest of us, or not? Looks like my Huntsman will be 209 only. I wonder if NEF changed the 2005 Huntsman Breech plugs to 5/8" also?

Cecil advised me to call NEF and exchange the barrel.  He didn't say whether he would come out with a 7/8" breech plug, but from our conversation, I would say he's not planning on it.  He had run into this problem with one other customer, so he was aware of the problem.... don't know if he was aware of it prior to developing the plug.

Nice looking plug... too bad for those of us with the old system.

I sure was not aware that NEF has changed their breech plug design.

Based upon Cecil's comments,I am more than a little taken back that Precision Rifle's web page was not altered to reflect this condition...especially after indicating that this problem came up with another customer.

Their NEW ITEM info should caution potential customers to measure their breech plugs OR at least have the customer check during the order placement! I mean how long would it take them to ask at order placement,or revise their web page info.

Currious....did Cecil offer to refund your money for the breech plug if returned? I would sure hope so.

I didn't ask Cecil whether I could send it back, but I did mention that I thought he should let people know that the breech plug wouldn't fit the older style plug.

Pictures of the new 25 acp plug next to my old style plug can be found at the following link:  http://community.webshots.com/album/298759836YuTEpt
