range report part 2, problem fixed!
« on: March 13, 2005, 01:21:12 PM »
this thread was report #1 http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=55486

while that old tasco I had was not meant to be permanent, I thought it would due for awhile.

WRONG!!!!

took it out last week and shot at 100yds.    still shooting woefully inconsistent. when sighting in, I had 2 shots that were 1/2" low. gave the scope 2 clicks up(1/4" each). next 3 shots were 2" high.

called Natchez, picked up a Simmons 6-18-50 on sale.

went to the range for a tryout today.

while I only shot at 50yds, results were great. all brands grouped consistent,no scattered groups, no wandering zero.

best results were with the Hornady 17gr.

3 shot, 1/4"---- 5shot,9/16"

also shot some remington,CCI, federal, and 20gr Hornady.

needless to say, I am much happier now with my Sportster!

heres a pic through the scope.

heres the 17 next to his 223 big brother.

another update.

went to range after work for a 100yd tryout with new scope.

heres the best 2 groups. both 3 shot. both Hornady 17gr vmax.
one on right is 1/2".

couldn't get close to that with any of the other brands.

but, like they say about rimfires, " what works well in one rifle, might not in another".

for fun, busted a couple onions and water filled small pop bottles with it.   on one of the bottles, the top of the screw cap blew off while the threaded part remained in place.

destructive little bullets, aren't they!

Tried the CCI .17hmr Speer  17 gr TNTs today.  A little windy out but got a 5 shot group of about 3/4" at 100 yds.  3 were in a ragged hole  with the 2 flyers off to each side.  This is the the most accurate rimfire I've seen.  Also tried the Hornady 17 gr V-Max and the Fed 17 gr Ballistic tip.  Both of them were good, but the CCI was better.  I want to try some of the 20 gr when someone around here stocks them.
My prayers are always answered,  sometimes the answer is no...........

MidSouth's web-site shows they are back in-stock.  Wish price was closer to the Mach 2 though :)
