i was just wondering what you guys are getting with your rifles with w296 powder and a 180gr bullet.today i shot over a chrono three times with the most fps at 2023 and the other two shots were at 2017 and 2019 fps.i just couldnt beleave i was getting that kind of speed out of a 12 inch barrel.you see im involving you guys in my Contender shooting because there are more 357max shooters here than any other place i visit.im shooting faster than the data given to me from Speer.the other guy was shooting a 357max Contender too and his speeds were more in line with what you would expect out of a pistol.his max speed was at 1700fps but the load was down from max.i think im getting rifle performance with this load and bullit.talk to me please.

oh by the way my load is

cci small rifle primer
23gr of w296 (max load)
Speer 180gr flat nose bullet

Hey Jeff, I get about the same out of W296 and H110, I get a little more out of WC 1680. But evan thou IMR 4227 is a little slower( and not that much) I've gotten better groups with it.

I'm getting ready to shoot the max alot coming up, getting ready for the postal match ya know.

BTW that 1680 we use is surplus from GI brass.

Have you clocked any .22 LR over your chrony to see if it is right? 2000 fps is WAY out of line for a 180 from a 12" barrel, you're right, that is rifle velocities. that powder charge seems about right as a max loading for a 180 grainer and 296/H110. Are you using a Shooting Chrony or another makers chronograph? An improperly set up chronograph can read fast too. If the sensors and the software are set up for say a 3' distance between and you are closer, the thing will read faster. 300 fps is a 15% error at the velocities you should be getting and what you are getting, something is wrong for sure. I don't think you could stuff enough 296 in a Max case to get that much more speed, not without being dileberately silly, and you don't strike me as that. Do some investigating before shooting anymore of that stuff. I don't think your load unsafe, you wouldn't be able to open that TC after such an overcharge, but you need to know why you are seeing that amount of velocity. Keep us posted.

maybe his chrono is off i dont know.the guy that owned the chrono seemed to like the speeds that it showed from his gun.it looked like we were shooting over the chrono at about 10 feet.i shot some of his ammo and the recoil wasnt anything like mine.his had some recoil but it wasnt as sharp as the recoil from my gun.we were shooting paper rams at 200rds and my ammo shot flatter than his.he was getting ready for a sillywet shoot and i was just shooting.my smith has a chrono so next time i can try that one

Went to the manual (When all else fails? :roll: ) The #13 shows 23 grains of 296 with the spire pointed 180 and a velocity of 1881 from a 14" barrel. the other load is for a full jacket semiwadcutter 180 shows 20.5 grains and a velocity of 1716. Hope this helps, John

jph45,i have 50 rounds of this ammo left.i weight every 5th powder charge and i know they are right in there where they should be.my gun would break open with no problem at all and the primers look good.i think the guys chrony is off,it must be.i found the data that i got from Speer and that says 1881 fps just like you said.i also checked out some Seirra data and they are right in there too.Seirra has a load with one of there bullets "170gr JHC" that hits 1900fps with a 14 inch barrel.im going to try that bullet too.the Sierra people told me on the phone that i wouldnt loose much with a 12in to 14in barrel with the max.this load is a max load im shooting and im going to use it for hunting but i think im going to find something alittle cheaper for target work maybe the 170gr Sierra and the 180gr XTP.the Speer 180s run just under $20.00 for a 100 where the others are about $11.00 a 100

The Remington 180 semi jacket hollow point is about the cheapest for practice and you can buy them by the 500 or more if you want.
