Philly considering gun-control
« on: March 17, 2005, 03:39:22 PM »
City officials are considering gun-control measures-and once again appealing to state lawmakers in Harrisburg following a rash of murders that has left  23 people dead in 10 days.
Groups advocating gun-control say proposals to Mayor John F. Street and the City Council to restrict handgun permits  and sales may not directly address the problem of illegal guns involved in most street crimes, but they would likely help to some extent.
More than 80 percent of the city's 78 homicides so far  this year were commited by handguns police said.

That means the law-abidding people will be forced to hand their guns in, and the criminals keep  theirs.

Oughtta force law abiding citizens to go armed IMO. Would do more good than all the laws since time began.

I do believe that was done in a small town in the past. Crime rate was nil as the criminals knew everybody was armed, but the courts saw different and was deemed unconstitutional to force everybody to be armed. Can't remember the town or a when.

"In 1982, Kennesaw, GA (pop. 17,000) passed a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one firearm in their home, exempting those with criminal records or religious objections. Seven months after it took effect, the residential burglary rate dropped 89%, vs. 10.4% statewide. Since 1982, only 2 murders have occurred (1984 and 1989), both committed with knives."

Aint that something. Its unconstitutional to make people take care of themselves but its not unconstitutional to take away a constitutional right.
Maybe I shoulda said they oughtta PUSH the law abiding people to arm themselves. If some choose to be defenseless I guess they have that right as well.  :-)
