« on: March 14, 2005, 01:15:55 PM »
i have a 26" 300 win mag barrel that i would like to cut down a few inches. i am trying to save a little weight (alot of mountains up here) but i dont want to mess up ballistics or anything. i just wanted to know if anyone else has done, what the results have been, and how much they cut off.i see barrels all the time in the 20-22" range.any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks

I don't think you would knock off much weight by cutting back 4 to 6 inches of barrel.  You may want to look at a compact scope and a synthetic stock and forearm. But if you want to knock a few oz. of weight I guess you could go to a 22 inch barrel and have it recrowned. Or check and see if anyone can have your barrel fluted to reduce weight. I do not know if these people will do it, but you can give them a call. :D

You would be better off to sale your barrel and order another one from the custom shop. If you cut off the 26" barrel you would void the warranty. All T/C items have a life time warranty. Also, your bore may not be in the center of the bore where you  make the cut. T/C bends there barrels to make them straight. Just my personal opinion.

Gary Reeder custom guns makes 16" .300 WinMag barrels with muzzle breaks. Don't know if they will cut one down though.

back in jan '04 one of the gun mags took a custom rifle and cut back barrel 2" at a time most accurate i believe was 22" at all distances 16" barrel was the same at 100yds as 22" barrel .
that said you will lose some weight off by cutting and having it recrowned
good shooting

Just remember, the shorter you make it the harder it's going to thump you.  KN

I read a in depth article on the production of Savage rifles in a magazine a couple of years ago. One part of the proccess was staightening the barrels after they had been machined. I got the impression that it is pretty much standard practice to have to straighten them before they are mated to the actions.   KN
