What are you folks using on your handguns?  Please tell me about the brands/models you have used and how well they performed.

I’ll go. Currently I have mounted scopes from T/C, Burris, Nikon, Redfield, Leupold. Bushnell and Nikon Red dot sights and Holo sights by Eotech and Bushnell. I haven’t had any problems with any of them even on my very heavy shooters. That being said every set of rings has been lapped in, all screws have been set with Loc-Tite and the bases have also been set in epoxy on the barrel or frame. The vast majority of scope failures are caused by the scope moving in the rings and most of the rest are caused by someway restricting the free recoil of the handgun. Take careful steps to ensure a solid base and ring set and scopes will withstand the heaviest of recoiling handguns.

I have one Millet red dot on my BFR 500 MAG, a Ultra dot for my S&W500. A Leupold 4X on my 44 MAG Contender, a Weaver 2.5X8X28 that is slated for my S&W460 when it comes in. I like red-dots a lot for up close and low light hunting. And scopes for the open fields.  :D

got a bushnell trophy reddot on my 480 srh and seems to be ok
but may be going to a bushnell trophy 2-6x32 on it later.

I got the ring lapping kit from Brownell's    a long time ago and use it every time I mount a scope.
They are out of stock right now. I think Mid-South sells a kit also.

8) Brownells also sells a ring reamer made by Clymer that does the same thing without the mess of polishing/grinding compound.  For my purposes, I like the reamer better, but that is why they make both types.

Crawfish is right on about the importance of a solid ring/mount system. You can virtually eliminate scope failure by eliminating tube flex.  I put as many rings as I have room for on my handguns.  I have 5 on the Burris 1.5 x 4 that sits on my Raging Bull, and have experienced no problems in thousands of rounds of heavy loads.  :D

I have never had to say "boy I have too many rings on this scope" but I sure have had occasion to kick myself in the butt for not taking the time to fit another ring after a high end scope was destroyed buy a big boomer. It doesn’t take any more time to fit three, four or more than it does to fit two and you sure will save yourself a bunch of grief if you do it before instead of after.

My SRH in 44 magnum sports an AIMPOINT 3000 red dot sight. I have had no problems with picking up the dot regardless of ambient light. I have shot lots of rounds through it with zero troubles.

MKII 22 pistol has a TASCO PROPOINT Flawless.
