Hi
I wonder which kind of powder is used in hornady light manum and federal high energy rounds which can produce higher velocity at the same presure of standard rounds? I wish they could load my beloved 3030 with 150 gr att 2600fps or a 190 grain RN same as old savage 303 at 2300 fps :grin:

Yup, most manufacturers use special powders not available to the general public. When your buying thousands of pounds of powder at a wack, the powder manufacturers give you any special blend you want. This is why, currently, it is hard to get the .204 Ruger to handload to factory spec velocities and the same, I believe, for the .45 Gap in 230 gr loadings.

I bought some .308 Win cal. cartridges a while back & pulled one apart. The powder LOOKED like Win. 748, which I have, but that's as far as I'll go in trying to identify it. This is for informational purposes only. jd45

I seem to remember reading, some time ago, that Hornady had developed a technique that allowed them to pack a large amount of a slow burning high energy powder in their cases.

Could be Gold Bond Menthol, or Dr Scholls AFT. I would suspect the GBM as it is pretty strong. :shock:

Isn't the new IMR powder a finer grade and therefore you can get more in the case?
