Rifle Scope on 223 Rem?

What happened to that post?  I have a 223 Rem barrel, will a rifle scope be OK, or do I need to stick w/ pistol?

DO Not use a rifle scope on a pistol mainly because the eye relief for a rifle scope is a mear 2 to 4 inches verses the pistol scope with a relief of 9 to 16 inches depending on make

You are right on the verge as far as using a rifle scope. I would guess that if it is on a contender than NO, the recoil is a bit much. On a heavier arm (encore) I don't know as I have no experience. So you would have to check the recoil forces vs your ability to maintain a comfortable distance from the eyepiece....    Marty

I was one to recently post a question about if others use a rifle scope on a .223 pistol.  I decided to put a BSA target scope on my Encore in .223 and I am very satisfied.  I use a taco hold with my left hand cupping the front of the scope so my thumb and pointer finger form a circle.  Then I rest the circle against my eyebrow.  I hold the pistol grip with my right hand and tuck in my elbows towards my body.  When I shoot, I get a nudge but don't get hit in the nose or face with the scope.  For target shooting from a rest I do the same but lay the forend on the rest.

If you can be content to not see a full field of view you can use a high mag rifle scope with just about any specialty handgun.  Weight and or a brake, combined with cartridge and bullet weight/mv will determine how much of a field of view you can safely.  Of course with some set-ups you can safely shoot with a full field of view.

Rifle scope on a 223

I am considered a chicken when it comes to recoil, but I shoot both of my .223 barrels using a rifle scope.  I shoot Hornady 40 grain Vmax and 52 gr. Match using a rifle scope.  I have yet been hit with the scope.  Also, if you want to reduce recoil use 13 to 13.5 grains of Blue Dot powder.  I am getting just a tad under 3000 FPS with 13 grains of Blue Dot
powder in my 14 inch barrel.  Give it a try, it will surprise you both in FPS and recoil.
