forming 357 herret brass

:evil:  :evil: Hey every one, i having a lot of problems forming brass for th 357 herret,got winchester brass, maybee its not strong enough?, becaouse it crumbles starting at the case mouth to the shouldr or splits the neck, befor it reaches the shoulder am i doing something really wrong or what ? i'm useing new hornady new diemention dies, ive had excelent results with theses dies in other cals. some help please.

First you need to make sure you are using "new" brass. Brass that has been fired has a tendency to crack. Next, make sure you lube the cases good but not over do it. ( I use the Hornady spray lube).
The way I make mine is to leave the sizing die backed out a ways and run a case in then turn my die down a 1/4 to 1/2 turn,try it again until I get almost a straight case. Then I trim to length and try it in the barrel.
I keep turning the die down until I can just get a good snap closing the barrel.
I believe there was a posting on the old forum on this in the past.
BTW, Winchester brass is all I use for making my Herret rounds.

Are you running them into the file/trim die first? And cutting them to length? Is this the stage you are having problems at? Just a wee bit more info please. Also are they new, once fired and mutiple times fired?

Used 30-30 brass for years until someone here mentioned 375W brass.  I'll never use 30-30 again!  The 375W is easier to size and is of slightly thicker wall thickness which gives a more stable grip on the bullet.  (No more blackened case necks from gas getting back over the neck)

Just a note of caution.  When switching from 30-30 to 375 brass reduce your loads and work back up again as there is slighty less capacity in the 375 case once sized and fireformed.  This difference may be negligible, but why take the chance?

Kevin:  one of our posters, a fella who calls himself 'Buckweet', found that even with new 30-30 brass you would have some difficulty.  He found that you can use 375 Winchester brass without any problems at all and just loves it.  

He's out there somewhere.  He might even have some good loads for you.

  Thanks mikey i'myes i figuerd thet the 375win would be better to you after talking to a friend i forgot about who 's  been loading for wildcat cartriges for many yeaes this is my first attempt loading for these specilty cartriges, went and orderd new brass  and case trimmer and neck drimming tools and the all important chorogragh to check those velosities, this is going to be a good learning experiance, my old moto start low and work up.

For what it's worth:  Just yesterday I formed 50 357 Herrett cases from virgin R/P brass with the Hornady new dimension dies.  The dies are long enough on the interior that you can fully form the brass and then trim.  They worked really well.  
I am going to get a set for my 30 Herrett too.  My old forming process is not hard, but is much more involved than when using these Hornady new deminsions.
