Gun sales issue blurs line between suspects and guiltyThe idea that terrorists could walk into a gun store and buy weapons is unacceptable, yet the impression that it could happen was left by FBI Director Robert Mueller during a recent hearing before Congress.
He noted that convicted felons, fugitives, convicted drug users, noncitizens and a few other categories of persons cannot legally buy guns under federal gun laws, but that the list of prohibited buyers did not include suspected terrorists.
The key operative word here is "suspect." The people are suspected because they are on the government's watch list. Under our system of law, a suspect is not assumed to be guilty. In other words, a terror suspect is not automatically a terrorist and it is wrong to treat such a person as if they were.
