.45/70 bullets?
« on: March 24, 2005, 02:38:03 PM »
First to save me a phone call to NEF can someone tell me the rate of twist in the 22" 45/70 handii rifle, and  Can you guys also tell me which bullet weight seems to be the most accurate in the handi. I was hoping the hornady 350grain bullets will shoot well. It just so happens i have some trapdoor loads with both the hornady 300jhp and the speer 400 sp and  i also have a box each of near max loads for the same. I also never realized that the lever action data in the #13 speer manual max's out at 28000 psi but the hornady 5th edition data for the lever action max's out at around 40,000 psi.

Try 28gr. of Alliant 2400 with the 350gr. Hornady RN.  Several folks here are having good success with that load.

.45/70 bullets?

I've shot several bullets thru my 45-70 Handi and 45-120 BC, haven't shot any load/bullet that didn't group 2" or less at 100yds. From everything I've read here, they shoot all .458" bullets well, and for me that includes some cast bullets, too! The 28gr 2400/350gr Hornady load is no exception. The 300gr rem and win factory loads were also good, as well as the 405gr rems. The 350gr sierra in the PMC Silver ammo shot 2½-3" groups at 200yds!! In the 45-120 BC which has the same 1 in 20" twist, the Cast Performance 460gr WFNGC bullets shoot less than 1½" at 100yds with aperture sights!.

MIdeerhunter, it's just a matter of time before you get a .45-70 Handi, if I could only have 1 caliber Handi, it would be the .45-70.....but I'm sure glad I can have more than one!!!! Here's a pic of most of em...not including the newly aquired 22 Hornet, 30-06 UltraComp and 7x64 Brenneke...
