My weekend MIS-adventure
« on: March 22, 2005, 12:07:16 PM »
I have a friend at work that has been going psycho the past few weeks cuz he wanted to get out and bag some song dogs.  Im no expert, but of our group Im the only one to have killed one so far, so I decided to offer my help.  So we set the time to be Saturday.  We meet at 3:30pm and head up to the mountain we will hunt.  Now, I should have been concerned the minute he pulled out the camo jacket, but kept on the blue jeans   .  I figure it cant be too bad since there is a lot of snow on the ground still and the light blue might be Ok.  So we hike on out to our first spot.  I had to all but muzzle the guy to kep him quiet so we could stalk the last 150 yards or so in, and he had a dmaned hard time getting his .410 NEF to stay closed.  I set up my spot, get ready, run over and place the tape player between the two of us.......
So there I am sitting quiet, still nd watchfully.  About 15 minutes into the tape I happen to glance over at him..........there he is standing and leaning against the tree, not sitting     !!!!
After 25 minutes of nothing I decided to pull up stakes and move us.  Again the guy starts blabbing on in his normally high tone like nothing is wrong.  We get to our second spot.  Once again I get ready and set up same as before.  And one again there he is standing and leaning against the tree, but even WORSE this time the .410 NEF is leaning against the tree as well       !!!!!  I only let the tape play for 15 minutes this time before I said to hell with it.  Im hungry, my butt is cold and wet from SITTING in the snow, and its only about 20 minutes to sunset.....were outta here.
Flash forward to yesterday, I tell my normal hunting partner about it and we give a little gentle nature ribbing to the guy.  But he couldnt figure out why we were picking on him "What, they aint gonna see me standing when Im still, they are just dogs, besides they cant see no color anyways cuz they are night predators."          So we start a little conversation and I begin telling him about the experts opinions Ive read and seen over the past year or so to which he replies "Ahhhh I dont care about no experts they all got opinions, who cares!"
Yup, forget every book and show Ive seen that suggest even making you GUN camo, forget the biologist reports, the common sense!  Forget it all, cuz this guy dont need no expert advice, he is a super hunter   .  I told my buddy from now on he can "try" and get his own 'yote.  Heck, he couldnt even make a proper call to begin with.  While I was packing up from the first call site he was up on the tote road blowing his predator call.....and it sounded like a part favor with a ducks beat             .

Thank you for ventilating all that for me!!
It has happened to me more than once.  Not so much the arguing, but no matter how many times I tell them, they have that blank stare and do it again.  The whole "quiet" thing just baffles some people.  I described it as a "noise bubble".  You are in the center of it.  It follows you everywhere you go.  And the louder you are, the bigger it is.  (see my signature)

If I was to try ... let me say WHEN I tried new sports I listened and READ as much as I could.

I just started silhouette shooting.  It was amazing how much info those guys shared with me.  So a friend of mine was interested in trying it.  But he wanted to do everything different.  I just kept saying, after I try it the way the good guys are doing it AND start winning ... by then I'll know enough to develop my own plan.
Be vewy, vewy quiet.

Yup, thats me to a tee.  I read as much as I possibly can on a subject.  I figure that every hunter has an opinion, thats fine.  But when 20 people tell you the same thing, well then you can at least take THAT as a truth.  Of course this guy has a problem reading as well.  He had a copy of Gun Digest for 2004.  He was always coming down and making odd comments and srguing about me on things like "Oh the .30-30 has more power and better ballistics than the .270."  Now of course I aint gonna shut my trap on that one, so when I tell him he is outright wrong he goes up, checks the book and comes back with his tail between his legs.  I keep telling him to either put his glasses on when he reads or throw the book out  :-D .
