Thanks to Lik2hunt(and Mac) I have a new to me, almost new in box Handi in my collection...a 7x64 Brenneke w/24" barrel is now residing in my gun cabinet. Got some brass from him too, so I can do some handloading for it. Got a die set from Midway, Mac provided me with some load data that looks promising...now all I need is some range time which won't happen for a few more days with the weather having turned wet and rainy, but that just gives me time to build those loads....160gr Nosler partitions and 175gr Speer Grand Slams....oh boy!!!! Thanks Lik2hunt, you're a pleasure to do business with and a heck of a nice guy!!!

Do you have an opinion on your Swift Premier scope you would like to share? I was looking at scopes today for my new .223 and he had a lot of Swifts there. I have bought only Bushnell and Sightron scopes in the past year.

All of the Premier line that I have looked at or owned are great scopes, and you sure can't beat their lifetime, doesn't-matter-if-you-are-the-original-owner-or-not over-the-counter replacement warranty! I have currently 2 of the 4-12x50, a 6-18x40, and a 6-24x50 and have had 2 of the 4-12x40 scopes in the past, all have been great scope, without exception and they are priced right to boot!! Sightron, Leupold, Nikon, Burris and Swift are the only non Euro scope mfrs to offer this type of warranty. All of the Swift scopes I have came off ebay, the waranty is still good to me, all I have to do is send it to Swift in California or take it to a Swift dealer for exchange....but I've never had a problem with them, either! great deal!!

Just how big is that gun cabinet, or is it cabinets?

I guess you could call it a walk in gun cabinet.....but actually it's a room size cabinet, albeit a small room!! My den in the basement is my gun cabinet....complete with lock on the door, nothing fancy, just a place to tinker and now it's also my reloading room!!! :grin:

Jerry, I think my wife would just as soon have me move into the barn, guns or not!!!

Where do you keep finding all these fine firearms? I only know a couple of people locally that even know what a Handi is. I guess I need to hang out with a better class of people, or at least a class that has better taste.

Another thumbs up for the Swift line of scopes. I have had several of them without one speck of trouple. I have one on my 280 Handi rifle right now. So far two Mule deer with two shots. I have done a lot of shooting with that scope on other rifles as well though. :grin:

Yeah, I know, but I had the opportunity to get the rare Brenneke, so I took Lik2hunt up on his offer.....and now I'm using 280 rem loading data for it!!! But the 280 does have a 26" barrrel, so it is a bit different..

Now, to get that 22 Rem Jet!!! :eek:

So looking at the case dimensions, the 7x64 is just slightly smaller than the 280 Rem?

How do they compare in performance?

Mac, you wouldn't consider selling that lil' 30-30 would you??? I'd like an iron sighted model, that stock set is something special!!!

Handirifle, the .280 rem and 7x64 are pretty much ballistic twins in a modern firearm. The original 7x64 was probably a weaker action and would require reduced .280 rem loads as shown in the Lee reloading manual.

Mac, that sure is a great looking 30-30!! That stock looks as if it could be the rare and much coveted Laminated Red Camo .22 Hornet stock set!!! They are certainly a rare set and I can see why they are so much in demand!!!....<><.... :grin:

Tim, is your newest a 7x64 or a 7x65 Brenneke?

I've been checkin' out my manuals and I haven't found a 7x64 Brenneke yet. Hornady 3rd lists something they call "7X65R; "...developed by Wilhelm Brenneke in 1917. It's popularity remains mostly in Europe and is chambered most often in double rifles, drillings, and single shots" They go on to state that "Caution must be used when using the data presented here, as this data was obtained using a strong bolt action Mauser rifle."

Their loads for a 154gn spire point maxed out at 2900fps.
Of my 8 manuals the Hodgdon #26 is the only one that mentions it is Hornady handbook 3rd edition.

What is the headstamp info on your cases?

(EDIT-I found a drawing of the 7X64 at the link you posted to the reloading page, they definately are different. 7x64 is a rimless case, while the 7x65R is rimmed. I thought that the rimmed version made more sense in th handirifle. silly me.)

Just got back from the gunshop. I just purchased my first Swift scope and got the 4-12x40 Premier. I was impressed at the clarity and eye relief it had. It will be on my first Handi come Tuesday. My friend said he has sold a ton of these and has had none come back.

Glad to help, I'm sure you'll be happy with the model 676, they are probably one of the most recommended scopes at RFC....My history with the Swift scopes: I didn't know much about the Swifts until my huntin & fishin partner started working at a Sporting Goods store that carried the Swifts in '92. He was impressed with Swift's quality for the price and even more impressed with their over-the-counter replacement policy after dealing with Swift a few years. He had a few questionable returns that he had to deal with, obvious customer abuse, one had been run over by a p/u truck where the rifle had been leaned against the truck, truck was moved and the rifle fell. He took the scope in, sent it to Swift, they returned a new scope! On others that weren't so obvious, all the scopes he submitted for warranty coverage were replaced, without exception....Most of em he replaced at the store and Swift replaced their inventory....For the money, they are indeed excellent optics and have great customer service to back them up...if needed! FYI, Swift is an American owned company, rifle scopes and binos are built in South Korea.

Thanks for the info on Swift scopes. That is just like Sightron's warranty to the best of my knowledge though I have never had to use it on either of the two I own. The Swift had the features I needed for a coyote/groundhog rifle and for a very reasonable price in my opinion. I'll let you know how everything turns out this next week if the weather is nice like it is supposed to be.

By the way, I was in Washington last May being recruited by a company in Monroe, WA. It was beautiful country and a good offer but I chose to stay close to home while my son is still in college here. After that, who knows where I will go?

The 7x64 and the 7x65R are twins the R stands for rim. Norma makes ammo for the 7x65R. There are a few other makers that make ammo.
Since the 7x65R cartridge was designed for break open action or the drillings, it is loaded for a lower pressure than the 7x64.

The 7x65R would make a fine cartridge for a Handi but ammo would be pretty costly. It is the same principle as the 7x57R.
With the more stronger and and better break open actions the 7x65R are not so popular any more.

The 7x64 is not quite up to the 280 Rem but very close.
