Best deal on scopes??
« on: March 24, 2005, 09:35:02 AM »
I'm looking for some glass for the 204 barrel I purchased for my Encore rifle.  Probably going to go with w/ VX-III 6.5-20x40.  Maybe an Elite 4200 or a Conquest.  Any opinions on these or other applicable scopes??
Any ideas of where to get the best internet deal?
I have looked on SWFA and Durhams- pretty good prices, but was wondering if there is anything else out there.

Check out the Optic Zone.  They have a banner ad on this site.  I saved a bunch of money on a Bushnell 3200 a while back.  Leupold won't allow dealers to lower prices on their stuff, so it doesn't matter if you want one of them.

I bought the Bushnell 4200 6-24 mill dot for my future 204 barrel, when it gets here from Bullberry.  It is incredibly clear.  Even clearer than my 2 Leupold VX-IIIs.

Buckskin,
Do you really need all that magnifaction???????? I have a 3.5 to 10 Leupold on mine. I run 3 x 9`s on about all the rest of my varmint rifles. I have a 24X and a 36X Leupold target scopes that I use for load work-up and comp. shooting, but I don`t like that much power in the field.

Well for me it depends on what kind of hunting or shooting I'm doing.  For standard hunting like deer, elk, pig or moose 10x is plenty.  Especially if there's any chance of off-hand shooting.  In fact, most of the time it never gets above 6x.  Now if I'm prairie dog or coyote hunting I seldom go under 18x, even with 22's.  For me, I figured my 204 is going to "primarily" be a bench rest gun. Even when dog hunting, 99% of the time, I'm going to be firing from a rest and even if I'm not I can still turn it down to 6x.  In fact I just purchased a Nikon 4.5-14 for my new Marlin 917VSF and now I'm thinking I should of went bigger.

I always try to figure it this way.  What power do I think I'm going to be running on this rifle most of the time and get a scope that starts it's power range just below that.

I rarely drop below 6 or 7 on my VX-III now, and alot of times wish it would go over 14.  And with a nice shooting rifle w/ little to no kick, I think a 20X would be fun.  And I really want to see what this gun will do on paper.   I'd like to know if the 4200's duplex is fine enough for paper shooting.  When I looked at the 4200 in the store the seemed very heavy compared to my fine duplex of my Leo.  But I have heard great things about their quality.  Can I aim at a 20 cal hole in paper w/ the 4200??
