Rem. 11-48 Mag Extension?
« on: March 19, 2005, 01:36:33 AM »
I know that the Forearm screw cap on the 870 is the same threads as the 11-48  (I have both). Would it be possible to use an 870 mag. extension kit on the 11-48. Please forgive me if I am overlooking an obvious answer here. I have thought about for a while and can't rule out the possibility. Thanks for any help. There is an old 11-48 with bad wood and a bulge in the barrel at about the 22" mark, I am considering buying it for dirt cheap, refinishing the wood in texured black, and cutting the barrel to 18 1/2" and maybe even extending the mag tube if possible. Thanks again.

Off hand I would have to say it would be possible. The 11-48 is a recoil operated shotgun so you would not be able to use a clamp to the barrel to help support the mag extension. The barrel must remain free to recoil to the rear.  11-48's can be picky feeders and in a social weapon, functional reliability is very important.

Thanks. I don't get to spend as much time as I would like but try to keep up. I'm trying desperately to get some of the work that's been in my shop a long time, done! Finished making the last of the small parts for a Mannlicher-Schoener(sp.) tonight. Came in in a basket and had been Chrome Plated!!!  I hand polished the chrome off and blued.. remounted the ramp, made the screws. Bought a sight blade and installed. Made the trigger pin and trigger spring. Made the shell latch pivot screw and shell latch spring. Even the screw for the muzzle cap was missing in action!  Tomorrow a good cleaning, lube and final assembly. Oh and I put the last touches on a winchester 72 stock that I refinished. It was a match rifle (80A receiver sight) that had grooves cut and was drilled for side mounts.  My brother needed a good rifle for his son. This should do nicely.

In experimenting with my 11-48, I have gone as far as a 5 shot mag extension tube with the barrel cut back to 22". Since you can't use a barel clamp, the 5 shot mag extension gets kinda whippy and I was worried about snapping the threaded end off the mag tube. So I decided to not go past a 3 shot extension. No problems after about 1000 rounds, except extension tends to shoot loose after 25-30 rounds, so I just reach up and tighten it 1-2 clicks every so often.

You might try deepening the notches on the cap.  Give the detent ball a bit of a better bite.  It shouldn't loosen with shooting..
