Are there any nutria shooters on this board?

I'm interested in how to shoot and collect nutria in Louisanna.

How much time do you have to get them before they sink? What is the best way to dispose of carcasses? Are they out in the daytime? What's the average number you could collect in a day? Are there many out there doing it? Is it hard to get permission from private landowners? Are public grounds just as good?

Thanks. Bob

When I was down in LA, we went out and I wanted to get a nice big nutria.
We saw a lot of them and if I would have had a 22 rifle instead of the POS pistol I had, we could have killed a hundred. I ended up shooting 2 because we had to get so close to them because of the crappy pistol.
The first one I shot was absolutely huge. He dives under the mat of that green plant with the air chambers in the stems and the second one which was smaller, just tipped over and kicked on top of the mat.

If you were to use a 22 rifle and took head shots, I think you could get quite a few.

We were on public property and it was legal there. Make sure you check to make sure it is legal where you go.

I have also heard that it is kind of hard to get the state to pony up the money for the bounty.

You can take them here in MD by shooting as well, although they added a lot of restrictions on it on the state and Federal marshes-ie-was .22 only,or shotgun with steel shot, because of the waterfowl. Now it's back to centerfire.Kind of wanting to get after them with SKS,just for grins.Have to watch out for otters though-the MAN frowns on shooting them.Plus,I've seen sika deer there that weren't much bigger than a really big nutria. Feds had a MASSIVE,multiyear trapping operation at Blackwater NWR,and have just about eradicated them there.Of course, every decade of so we get a prolonged hard freeze up here, and that really puts the hurt on them. In winter of '76/77,there were huge piles of them frozen solid.Dave

That would be fun, long range shooting if you can catch them against a backstop.

I doubt very much if I go down there but it is an interesting topic. If I could find a job and get paid a descent wage it would interest  me. Either that or culling feral hogs or possible deer.

ADC jobs don't seem to come up.
