Handi Rifle vs 700BDL
« on: March 23, 2005, 04:38:56 AM »
I wanted to tell you about a .30/06 handi rifle i bought my dad  a couple of years ago I don't know if this is how they all are or if i just got a good one. But this might help someone dicide on weather or not to try NEF handi rifles. I have an old Remington 700BDL .30/06 in like new condition it was only used for two years and then became a backup rifle until last year . I took both the BDL and the Handi to the 50 yard range. The remington to me shoots great and on a 6 shot group they all touched and you could tell that i took at least 5 shots. ( i wish i had a picture to post)Now i took the handi rifle and i took 10 shots and when you lookedat this group all you could see was three shots. No i didn';t put 7 shots off paper. This rifle was amazing. I used the same box of ammo with this test they were Remington 180 grain PSPCL bullets. This 06 shot better then my .223. I am curious as to the accuracy you guys have gotten with your .30/06 handi rifles.  My Dad always feared the handis wouldn't eject when he needed it the most and he sold that gun to a good friend of mine.

well, a buddy and i shot a bit Sunday afternoon. he wanted to check his bdl in .30-'06 since he'd he'd taken the barreled action out of the stock for  after-season cleaning. i had my .30-'06 handi with me to check a couple of handloads and to see if the rubber washer treatment had helped it settle a bit. his bdl shot mighty fine. my handi with the rubber washer treatment shot slightly better. :)

Yeah, you did get a good one, but that's not unusual for the handi in 06
I handload, mostly, for mine but have shot factory loaded rem, win, fed in 150 and 165 grain PSP.
All three brands will cloverleaf 3 shot groups at 50yrds.
I topped it with a 3x9 Burris......and I have shot, a few (less than) 1 inch groups at 100yrds....and it will shoot inside a 2 inch ring all day long.....but to be quite honest even cranked up to 9x my (old man) eyes just arent good enough to do much better than that... but thats not the gun....thats just me and the optics!

nipprdog that's a nice group, will it usually hold those close of groups?

I had one for a while as well. It was a good shooter but not as good as the one you have. It would always shoot 2 inches ot less.
shot placement is everything.

I always thought I would like to have a 06.  I have never fired a rifle bigger than a 22.  I have a 243/20ga combo coming from walmart next week.  I figured if they had the 243 in a youth combo that would be a good place to start.  I think the next one will be a 30-06.  Might be a bit of over-kill for varmits, but it sure sounds like you all enjoy shooting them and all reports I have read are favorable.

There's an 06 barrel on Ebay right now....
it's approaching the cost of a fitted barrel, though...

Not all barrels on Ebay sell for $200!!

I should've mentioned that was my best group ever with it. it was the fifth 3shot group of the day.  while the POI would move a little as it warmed up, the groups would tighten up.

on average, it could do about 1& 1/2".

pretty good since I only shot winchester superX through it. $12/box.
