I read an interview with Mr. Hornady about the time the light magnums were released and he said that Hornady had developed a process that is not simply a matter of using the right powder. He said that the process could not be duplicated by handloaders.

The light magnums use a proprietary process. It involves layers of different powder in the same case. The powder is compressed to keep it in position. It's not that a reloader couldn't do it, but more like a very dangerous outcome if not done exactly perfect.

The 708 I pulled was simply loaded with 52 grains of a stick type powder, wasnt compressed but it must be a special type .

From what I have heard from others that have actually toured the Hornady facility & have seen the Light Mags on the production line, they use a 'duplex' loading of smokeless powders that they develop for each cartridge, that they do not release as data.
