partial size straight wall case??
« on: March 24, 2005, 04:08:04 PM »
I usually partially size my bottle neck cases in a full length die or neck size since they headspace on the shoulder in my Contender.  I only have one caliber that is a straight wall case (44 mag) so please allow for my ignorance on these.  Is there any advantage to partially sizing a straight wall case?  I am using a carbide sizing die.  These rounds are only shot in one gun.

Thanks,
Curtis

Yep! I do my 44 & 454 that way, and a friend started partially sizing his BFR 45-70 too. He also said his accuracy improved a bit. You'll also be doing less trimming.

Thanks all, I loaded up 25 240 XTP and 25 300 XTP last night sizing to just below where the base of the bullet would be when seated.  I liked the result.  Now I just gotta shoot 'em.

I never really thought about neck-sizing straight wall cases before - partially because it's so easy to just size the whole case and because I only have pistols that uses straight walls and those cases last forever anyway.

Is this worthwhile for pistol use too??

It may be that where full house loads are used, that's where this procedure will give longer case life. jd45
