Smith&Wesson 41 accuracy
« on: April 11, 2005, 05:12:51 AM »
I recently purchased a very well maintained S&W 41 with a 5.5in barrel. I will be using in in my clubs upcoming bullseye pistol league(50ft). I've tried every imaginable ammo up to and including the very expensive Lapua Signums. Out of a rest at 50ft, the best groups hover around 1".  Is this the kind of accuracy I should expect or am I looking for a new barrel? Also where would be the best places to find aftermarket for the 41.(barrels,grips ect...) Thanks for any help!!

my 41 came with the 7in barrel and it will shoot right at 1in at 50yrds with fed match or cci pistol,i also have a clark bullseye barrel for my target work it will do a little better than the factory barrel with the fed match or wolf match.i like the clark a lot but have you made sure that your barrel is real clean,i would try deep cleaning it before i replaced it.you can also have your barrel relined if it is shot out and save a few bucks.

Congratulations on your purchase.  I think you will love it.  I have had my 41 since the early '70's.  I have two barrels for it, a 5 1/2 and a 7" that is scoped. It must have had 30K rounds thru it and still shoots great.  For competion find ammo that shoots reliably. Misfires cost you dearly in timed and rapid fire.  Accuracy is a bigger concern if you want to shoot at the longer ranges, ie silhouette and 100 yard matches.

Did you shoot from a bench with a scope? Or from a rest like a Ransom rest?  There's a menu item at bullseyepistol.com that shows how one accuracy tester tested his gun.

I think you should be getting 1" groups at 50 yards from a gun shooting without the influence of human error.

Try CCI standard velocity and Eley yellow box pistol.  But any of the European match ammo will likely be good.

Ask around your league /club to find access to a ransom rest. There is likely one kicking around. If you ask, you'll also likely find access to other barrels to compare your too. 1" @ 50' is suspect for a 41.
