357 Hand Ballistics ???
« on: March 28, 2005, 08:48:38 PM »
All the ballistics I have found on the 357 are for pistols.  Does anyone have numbers on standard 357 loads out of a Handi?
NOT ON MY WATCH

Cookieman,

I'm not sure I know what a "standard load" is, but if you mean something like the Keith load (13.5 gr 2400, 170 gr  Keith LSWC, CCI 500 in .38 Special brass) , it will average 1698 fps MV and 1088 Ft Lbs ME.  The same load with a 158 gr Oregon Trails (OT)  Laser Cast LSWC will average 1643 fps MV and 947 ft lbs ME.   I think the OT 158 gr is a .358" bullet and the Dry Creek Keith 170 gr is a .359" bullet.  The difference in diameter probably has something to do with the velocity difference, since they were both shot out of the same 22" Handi rifle.

A 125 gr Sierra JHC with 13.5 gr IMR SR 4756, CCI 400, in .357 brass will clock at an average 2057 fps MV and 1175 ft lbs ME.

All of these loads are over loaded according to the newer manuals, so use the information at your own risk.  However, I'm still typing and posting after using these loads (or hotter) for over 30 years.

The Skeeter Skelton load of 12.5 gr 2400, 158 gr XTP/HP, CCI 500 in .38 Special brass will yield an average of 1609 fps MV.
