Ban Semi-Auto.......
« on: November 26, 2004, 12:39:01 PM »
Well, it’s started!!  With the shooting/killing of those hunters in Wi. the talk about banning semi-auto rifles is on(next will be semi-auto shotguns and lastly semi-auto handguns).  Check this out;

Ban Semi-Auto.......
« Reply #1 on: December 02, 2004, 06:07:23 PM »
The guy is wrong on his facts.  There was only one rifle among the hunters who where shot.  The hunter holding the rifle was either the first or second hunter shot.  The rest were unarmed.

Second hunting with semi-autos is not new.  Remington, among others, has been selling a pretty good semi-auto hunting rifle for decades.

What I find absolutely unbelievable is that it was legal for Vang to be hunting with a 20 round clip.  How does any conservation commission authorize any hunter to go into the woods with 20 rounds at his disposal.  Can't do it when upland game hunting.  I my state you are restricted to 11 rounds and a lot of us think that is 5 too many.   The clip thing isn't a rights issue. Heck I have owned assault rifles with 30 shot clips and have nothing against them.  For me it is a hunter safety issue.  If you can't get your deer with the first or second shot, your not going to get it with your 20th round.  All a lead spraying hunter does is put the farmers wife 1/2 mile away in jeopardy.  I think that what should happen is that hunters immediately propose that rifles used in hunting be limited to 5 or maybe 10 rounds tops.   Otherwise there is a good chance that the assault weapons ban will be reimposed.

30 rd clips for hunting...
« Reply #2 on: January 28, 2005, 06:23:29 AM »
I can't speak for out there, but here in NH and ME, the law limits semiauto hunting rifles to 5 shot clips.  .22 rimfire and pistols are excluded from that requirement.

My experience has been that usually the first shot is the one that really counts.  Certainly there are exceptions to that statement, but a majority of the time, rarely do follow-up shots have much value unless the animal goes down and needs a finishing shot.  Once a deer gets into high gear, most follow-up shots are a waste of lead.  I don't think I have ever fired more than three times at a deer.

Pennsylvania allows semi-auto shotguns for small game hunting but bans semi-auto rifles for big game hunting.  That's one of the reasons Remington's 760/7600 pump rifles are so popular in that state.  I'm not sure what the logic is to the semi-auto rifle ban for hunting but maybe it's the lead-spraying thing mentioned above.  Shotguns are limited to three shots for both waterfowl and for upland game.

BTW - Unless you are shooting an M1 Garand, your semi auto uses a magazine not a clip.

clip vs. magazine

Yes, I am familiar with stripper clips.

Maybe where you are from folks are up on proper terminology.  Up here in NH and ME, they've been calling "magazines" clips since I was a very little kid.  If I was to call it a magazine up here, somebody would likely point to the magazine rack!   :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

All the "backwoods hillbillies" around here(and that includes me too) call any detachable magazine a "clip" and have done so for as long as I can remember.  Sure I know better but if you tell one of the guys down at the range to toss you a magazine you most likely will end up with a “American Rifleman” or “Playboy” in your hands(depending on who tossed it).   :-D   Lawdog

But regarding private ownership, we can own anything legal under federal law.  I love PA!

I guess you folks call the engines in your vehicles "motors" or something silly like that, too.
