Looking for info on K31 Ammo
« on: March 30, 2005, 05:22:48 AM »
I bought my K31 last night along with 20 rounds of the GP11.  I hear alot of people talk about how expensive it is, but I don't know how much other military surplus ammo goes for.  The GP11 costs about the same amount as 20 rounds of the 30-30 ammo I use.  I have read some previous posts about the GP11, and there sames to be some concern that it is hard to find.  Is this true?  Right now the gunshop has a bunch of this ammo, and www.midwayusa.com has cases of this for sell.  What's the story?

Now, next question.  I know next to nothing on the GP11.  Can this be used for deer hunting, or is there another load available for that?

Thanks

I have not bought any yet but since it is a military round it must be FMJ which is illegal for hunting.  I plan to reload and since the GP11 is berdan primed I really do not have much interest in it. You can buy GP11 and use it for shooting. In all fairness it is considered Match grade ammo.  but I would plan on reloading boxer primed brass for it if it was me. Grafs is out of brass now but is supposed to get some more in by Mid summer and Win 284 brass can be used just by running it through a 7.5x55 Swiss die. Or  if you did not want to go full blast into reloading you could buy a bunch of the GP11 to shoot and you could pull some of the bullets and replace them with softpoints of the same weight for hunting ammo. Congrats on getting your gun post some pics.  Most guys who buy these guns wind up reloading for them as you can make cheaper ammo than the GP11 and that way you know you will always have ammo. Plus with this gun being 308 cal once you get the brass the skys the limit in bullet choices.  Norma brass is expensive but made very well it will last for a long time with average reloads I have heard that guys using the 284 Win brass have no problems with it either even though the rim is a bit smaller than the 7.5 brass. Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
