A Great Day for Golf!

Mortar Golf That Is!!!!! :-D

Anyway, , I finally got off my butt an took my golf ball mortar out for it's first try. Wow, what a blast!!! Those things really fly!!!! It was a prefect day to do this.

My only question now is. Do I yell "Fore" or, "Fire".

Below are a few photos. I wish I had a parting shot of the golf ball heading into the blue... Maybe next time.

I think I like this new sport. Anyone up for a round of golf???? or, how about golf trap???

Cool!

I think we need to start the annual Coehorn Open tournament!

So did your golf balls make it to the green?  Par 3?

What powder charges are you using and what ranges are you getting?

I like that idea. :)

I started out using 50gr. and I fiqure that the ball was landing somewheres between the 200-300 yard mark. The final load was 75gr. and that put the ball between the 300-400 yard mark. Ofcourse these are just estimates as I was out in the desert and didn't have any true marking.

It was fun none the less. Even put a grin on this sour puss of a face... :-D

ooooooo - 200 to 400.  You're going to have to either scale back to do the 30 yard competition or load it stiff enough for a low earth orbit and really work on accuracy after one revolution.

DD & I will set up the Eastern division of the Coehorn Open, do you want to handle the Rocky Mountain league?  We really need to get a competition going here!

I wonder if we could get a T time at one of the local golf courses?

I'd be more than happy to join the Left Coast contingent.  Is it also open for lead ball at 30 yards?  50 yards?  What be the par?

If we're lucky we'll havet to divide the LCC into N & S divisions.

Lead ball competition sounds good!

A one pound "cannon ball" fishing weight works just fine in a golfball bored Coehorn.  60gr FFg will get it out a ways depending on the angle of the barrel, but still slow enough to glimpse the ball in flight.  How about 3 pound coffee cans for a target?

That would depend on whether the hole was punched or if the golf ball rolled/fell into THE hole.

Actually gentlemen the Mortar match is 30 yards.  Place a 1 inch diameter round stake in the ground and  fire 7 rounds at it.  Measure the point of impact from the stake for the closest 5 shots..  Smallest aggregate of the 5 shots wins.

That's the first competition - we're pipe-dreaming about national competition down the road.

Cat Whisperer how small of a charge will a guy need to only shoot 30 yards?

The reason I ask is I'm about to lath out my powder chamber/breach plug. It was going to be 1" by 1". But that sounds really BIG now.

Thanks Warf

Take a look at the pictures in the LINKS several posts down (of firing the hand gonne and the regular golf-ball caliber mortar).

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=126820&highlight=hand+gonne#126820

The hand gonne has a powder chamber, about 5/8 diameter and the same depth.  Works well.  Diameter of the bore, if I remember right is 1.750 which is ok (probably GOOD for thinner walls).

The charge was one or two .45 acp cases full of fffg.  That just filled the powder chamber.  That would put the golf ball out there from just under 100 to not yet 200 yards.  Note that the barrel length is exactly 2 calibers (two golf balls just fill it to the top) - that will affect range.

John N,

Nice action shot! What load are you using in that (quite a bit of smoke) .  Also, is that a "Gunsmoke" mortar? It looks like it is. Happy Golfing....

Intoodeep,

You're right, it a gunsmoke mortar. The load is 90 grains of FG which completely fills the sub-chamber. I lucked out on the camera shot. I use a digital camera which takes 7 frames in about 2 seconds. I usually start the sequence as the fuse fire disappears into the vent hole. However things happen fast, and most times I miss the "moment of truth" and just capture a lot of smoke after the initial fire ball.

Here are a couple more luck "shots". The mortar in the second picture actually flipped over under recoil, but I've since added about 6 lbs of lead to the carriage to see if that will calm things down.

Cat Whisper - hit the sand bunker......on the next hole....gotta back down on that charge just a wee bit.......
