Iron sighted 223 contender accuracy/sight options ?
« on: March 25, 2005, 01:09:15 AM »
Handguns with "open metallic sights only" are allowed for turkey hunting here in Bama. I have never owned a contender but the need to extend my range a little (not a world class turkey guide am I) has got me to wondering what is possible with iron sights and a 223 contender. I am not new to handgun hunting but it has all been done with red dotted revolvers.
Being unfamiliar with TC's, I also don't know about after market sights that might be more precise than standard OEM stuff. I'm not in the need for quick fast acquisition type sights. I need more of a precision arrangement. I need to hit a target the size of a softball as far out as I can reliably hit said target in field condition. I would think 80yds. or so would not be undoable? For all I know the OEM sights are fine for this but that's why I'm asking. Thanks for your help guys.

There is this: http://www.eabco.com/css_sts.html .

I had thought I heard someone talking about a rear aperture sight for the Contender, and have looked a few times, but always come up empty.

Good luck!

Hey Bama, pose this same question down a little further in the list at the Handgun Silhouette forum.  I know you will get your answer there as the question is right down their alley, ie. many of them shoot Contenders in a competition class that requires open sights.

Back afew years we used to shoot tin can around here at 65 to 85 yrds. We would just toss them on a hill side and open up with our reolvers, all with iron sight. We never got close to hitting all of them, but we did hit a good number of them. I now shot T/C`s as much as I do revolvers, but mine are all scoped. If I were to hunt with a .223 with iron sight I would try to find a 10 in barrel. I prefer the 10 in. barrels for off hand shooting and the loanger barrels for shooting for a rest.

I have a number of TC barrels that will pop the head off a turkey out to 100 yards with open sights.  .223 is a good choice.  I have talked to a few folks who liked their 22 hornets for turkeys.

You can get a nice 7tcu or 6.5 tcu, get a bomar/lansing sight set up and learn to shoot IHMSA or NRA silhouettes.  It will also be just the ticket for popping off a turkey noggin'.

iron sights for contender

a month or so ago i ordered the rear peep sight available for contenders/encores from fox river outfitters.  i mounted it on a 35 remington barrel and i have just begun to experiment.  it has a screw out aperture which would give you a very fine bead.  i also experimented with it at the range with the fine aperture removed.  both seemed alright but i have not really taken the time to get it honed in.  you might look at fox river though and consider it as an option for iron sights.
