New 45/70 barrel is a shooter

Well I finally went out and shot the 45/70 today and after a few shots getting it on, I shot two nice groups.  The first three shot group was 1 1/4" and the second was 1 1/2".  Boy does that sucker jump.  I have a limbsaver pad on it so the recoil wasn't that bad, but you can barely hang on to the forearm.  In the future I might see about having it magnaported just to tame the barrel jump.  I'm hopping to draw a moose permit for Idaho this year so I can try it out on some live game.

Hi ya rockfish you got my attention with gas check seperating , on 45-70 govt barrels I have a 16" katahin that is factory ported and shoots ,I'm interested on hearing more on the subject. i've gas checked other calibers and have never expirianced any problems, please enlighten me .

The only rounds I've shot through it are reloads.  My buddy has a Model 1895 Marlin and has been trying different loads for quite some time and has come up with one his gun likes, so I reloaded and shot those and my gun seems to like it.  300 gr. Sierra hp and 63 grs H335.  This is nice since I happen to have about 12 pounds of the stuff.  Load data is kind of confusing for the 45/70.  It seems that most people say to use load data for the lever actions, but Sierra's book shows a maximum load of 63.6 of H335 while Hogdgon shows a maximum load for the Marlin lever action as 68 grs. of H335 and both books are using the same bullet.  That's a big difference.  I'd like to experiment a little with different loads, but at the same time I don't want to over stress the action.  According to Hodgdon's book the 68 gr. load is still only at 38,800 CUP.

Hey Slavage, That's just a 1/4" Kick-Eez Cheek-Eez.  I put it on there mainly to give me a little more comb height, but it has the bonus of absorbing shock.

Gas Check on 45/70

Anyone have experience with factory TC barrels and gas checked bullets?  Mine is a factory barrel.  I haven't shot any yet, but I just bought some 405 grain bullets with GC's.  I haven't reloaded them yet so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Fearless
