I just bought some 45 cal bullets they are hornady 185gr xtp.
MY ? is that they don't have a crimping groove can I still crimp them or should I just seat them. I am going to load them hotter than normal any help :biggun:

I believe that bullet was intended for the 45 ACP. You could taper crimp them but I have no knowledge as to how well that would work with heavy loads. My suspiscion is that the bullets would creep forward and possibly tie up the cylinder during firing. Another possibility could be a Lee Factory Crimp die. I have no experience with that die. Why not use a heavier bullet with a crimping groove? 185 grs. is not utilizing the capabilities of the great 45 Colt cartridge.

Sounds like they are designed for the 45acp. Which is not a problem, I have loaded 185's and 230 hard balls in my 45 colt with great results. But you will probably need a good crimp if you are loading them hot. If not they may move in the case during recoil locking up your cylinder. KN

I ordered some 250gr soft points from Hawk bullets for my Marlin Levergun but forgot to ask for a cannelure. I thought, what the heck, I'll just crimp the juice out of them with my Lee factory crimp. It didn't work. At the first shot, the stack in the tube all buried the bullets in the case as deep as the powder level would allow. I melted the other 49 down in the lead pot and threw away the jackets.

just shot some of the 185gr xtp they shot great 3" group at 75 yds I crimped them just enough so that I didn't bulge the cases :grin:

You probably won't have much trouble with the lite 185's, it's when you get up to the 230-250 plus with heavy charges that the recoil will start to pull them a bit. I don't have any problem with my 200-230 grain lead acp bullets in the Colt but the 250's will pull a bit if not crimped good.
