Several questions for IZH-94 owners
« on: March 28, 2005, 05:38:14 PM »
I just received my IZH-94 in 12 gauge over 30-06. The gun is used, but in good condition, and has the original owners manual, however, the manual is either vague, or does not touch on several things that are important to me, so I have several questions, for Doug, or anyone else with pratical experience with this gun.
1. The rear iron sight is only windage adjustable?
2. The manual shows the barrel adjusting mechanism in the form of a drawing, yet gives no instructions on how to use it, can anyone tell me? Does this barrel adjusting mechanism adjust the shotgun barrel to the rifle barrel, or vice versa? The adjusting screw turns easily, my assumption is that it will vibrate upon firing and move over the course of shooting, is there any way to lock it in place?
3. If there is no elevation adjustment on the iron sights, has anyone shot slugs with the iron sights, and where are they hitting at 50 yards, high, low?
Thanks in an advance to anyone who can help me out, appreciate it.
Sincerely,
 Garry

Hi Garry,
I took the easy route and scoped the Baikal.  I was very fortunate that I did not need to adjust the barrels.  The 30-06 scoped in at 100 yards and the shotgun was shooting slugs on target at 50 yards.  So I believe the rifle is factory set at 100 yards for the rifle and 50 yards for the shotgun.  For the shot gun I was using a rifled choke by Colonial, which was able to produce 2 inch groups at 50 yards.

From what I know the verticle adjustment moves the rifle barrel, I have never had to adjust or change this.  Also, the adjustment screw has some play but has never come lose.

Good Luck,
Doug

Thanks Doug, I guess I will have to play with it. I am going to scope the gun also, I have a Leupold Vari XII 2X7, that I am going to mount on the gun with see-thru rings. My plan(if it will work), is to sight the shotgun barrel in with slugs, for 50 yards with the iron sights, then regulate the rifle barrel to the iron sights for 50 to 100 yards(whatever I can manage, having no experience with this barrel regulator). Then use the scope adjustments to sight the rifle barrel in for 200 yards with the scope.  Appreciate the help, and if there is anything anyone can add, I'm all ears, thanks again.
Sincerely,
 Garry

Hi Garry.  I have no real world experience with these yet.  What I gathered from all the reading I have done is:

Front sight is adjustable for elevation only
Rear sight is adjustable for windage only

Apparently, you are supposed to sight in the top barrel first to the iron sights, then use the adjusting screw to zero the rifle barrel.

I know nothing of the adjusting screw yet.

I am very interested in hearing all of your reports on experiments/range work with yours.  I have 30 slugs, 30 00 buck rounds and 40 rifle rounds waiting for my combo if it ever shows up.  Your experiences would be very benificial for me as well.  Good luck.

On another note, Norm changed his mind on the scope because an export permit is required.  Thanks again for your offer of assistance.

Hello Dave,
I did not see anything in the manual, about the front sight being adjustable, nor can I see any adjustment capability physically on the sight. There is a small hole, where the very top of the sight is (pressed?) into the sight unit, but no allen screw etc. Let me know when you get yours what you can figure out of it.
The barrel regulator screw seems to turn freely(both sides straight through), and there is simply NO explanation in the book about how to do it. I am assuming you hold one side with a pliers, and turn the screw on the other side with a screwdriver, and the whole thing is designed to turn freely???, but I haven't a clue.
Sincerely,
 Garry

Dave,
that sounds like a great setup.  I have the Leupold 2-7 on my Baikal, and find I am generally on the 2x.  I use the scope for both the shotgun and 30-06.  If your shooting slugs you should check out the Rifled choke, I gave been shooting sabot rounds with the rifled choke.

The Baikal is a field gun.  It kicks like an elephant, after 20 30-06 rounds and 10 12 ga rounds my shoulder was black and blue.  BUT more importantly, after 2 rounds the rifle barrel heats up causing the bullet to shoot off target.  I would suggest you shot 2 round groups and let the gun cool totally down.  This also gives your shoulder a rest.
