Here's the first buck to fall to my M96 Swede sporter. Handload was 129 gr Hornady interlock SP over 36.0 gr AXMR 2495. Buck only made it 15 feet despite not hitting lungs or heart. All I can say is, she kills as sweet as she shoots! 8)

Not yet but next year! It will be with my 96 Swede scout rifle. I just shot it this week with a scope on it and I definately will be using it next year. In the process of switching scopes as I had a OLD Bushnell Phantom on it and it is not the scope for hunting. Scope being added is a 30MM Tasco Pro with a illuminated crosshair set up. Yep them Swedes are sweet!
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

RaySendero, What rifle is that?  How do you like the scout scope mount?

I'm thinking about getting a mosin nagant to try the scout thing.  The price is right.

bja,

That's a 1939 8x57 Vz-24 Mauser w/ Leupold 2x scout scope on a S&K mount.  Really like the scout scope for quick target aqusition.  Seems that rifle is just easy to shoot - Most all at range even if its first time shoot it well.  More important I really like it - Its my carry around deer and hog rifle.

Here's a link to a hog hunt that we did a few years ago.  One guy used a muzzleloader and the rest of us used milsurps;  two K31's, an SKS and an 03A3 sporter.

K31's were loaded with 180 rem corelokt at 2380 fps, SKS was one hog with Wolf 154 SP and one with 122 HP, 03A3 was loaded with 150 SST (very destructive).

Longcruise,

Nice rifles and nice hogs!  Been thinking on getting a K-31 myself.  To bad you only got to shoot that big one with a camera!  But the smaller ones usually taste better.  Believe taste has something to do with size and adrenalin release.

That bullet and jacket separation on that 154 grain wolf 7.62x39 was interesting.  I would not have thought that a 7.62x39 would launch a 154 grain bullet with enough velocity to cause that bullet to loose its jacket.  How thick was the jacket? etc.?

The jacket was pretty thin imo.  I probablu have some chrono data somewhere for these but not handy at the moment.

The 122 HP rounds were much better hog killers.

Don't hesitate to jump in on the K31.  Don't know of anyone who has one that's not happy with it.  I've killed two BIG cow elk with mine and both died promptly.  One went about 30 yards and the other fell on the spot.  Bullet was a Barnes 180 gr XBT and while it performed well on the game the accuracy was the poorest ever obtained in either of my K31's.  My next hunt with K31 will be with the old reliable Nosler 180 partition.

Here's a link to another hog hunt.

http://www.mikeswillowlake.com/Hogs%202002.htm

The bigger hog (the blacker one) was killed with a .270 150 grain partition but the other one was killed with a Ruger mini 30 and a wolf 122 hp.  The 122 hp penetrated completey through the hog including the gristle shield which was about 3/4 inch on this animal.  The exit hole on the offside of the gristle shield was about 1/2 inch.  The exit on the bigger hog by the partition was smaller.

Maybe a better heavy bullet load for the SKS would be a handloaded American made hunting bullet at about 150 gr

Used my milsurp to take a Kudu in Africa a couple of years ago.

Westley Richards by Francotte Martini acquired by the ZAR (South African Republic)in 577/450 Martini, captured and turned over to the Port Elizabeth Town guard. They used the rifle to guard the towns water reservoir.  I could see that reservoir off in the distance from the hillside where I killed this kudu.

are you the same "Double D" who on another board was explaining about buying a BSA Cadet for parts, and ended up building a .17 rimfire on it instead?

6.5x55 1896 Swedish Mauser that I sporterized. I installed scope mounts, low safety, bent the bolt, cut and recrowned the barrel, cut back and refinished the stock.
This rifle is in the posession of my sister in law who needed a deer rifle several years ago. I finally caved and sold it to her. Been kicking my but ever since. While I had it I killed half a dozen deer, a black bear and two feral hogs with it. Excellent caliber and rifle.

This is a Norinco SKS that I made up as a ranch rifle. It is 7.62x39 of course. I reworked the trigger group, opened up the ejector port, stoned and angled the ejector, installed K-Lock quick disconnect scope mount, Simmons wide angle 4x rubber armored scope and a Bell and Carlson synthetic stock. It is a very accurate and reliable rifle with the proper ammo. I have fired 1.5" groups at 100 yards with this rifle off of sand bags.
I don't use it much for deer although several freezer meat does and one small buck have fallen to it. I often use it as loaner rifle when I place folks on stands where they can not see much beyond 50 yards. It mostly sees duty as a walking varmit gun and it is death to ground hogs and wild dogs that plauge my farm and hunting lease.

DoubleD,  What was your load in the Martini?  Do you shoot BP with it?  I would love to get my hands on a good one but never seem to come across one that looks like a shooter.

Riddle,  I surely like the SKS, bu then I like anything wearing a bikini :)

Is the scope offset??

Riddle, nice!  And, from what I've seen of the shooting qualities of Ruger Ranch Rifles, yours is probably a match for any of em.

Russian SKS loaded with mil spec ammo with FMJ removed and 100gr Hornady XTP's put in.  Very mean load on goat and wallabies.
I made the stock with the comb that adjusts for use with scope or aperture.
Cheers

Jeff
