Security Six question
« on: March 08, 2006, 06:20:11 PM »
I recently picked up a used 4" Ruger Security Six in pretty good shape. I used to own a 6" and I always wanted another in 4" for ease of carry. I've added a Hogue rubber Monogrip, stoned the action so that it is much smoother, and toned down the finish to a smooth satin with a Scotch Brite pad. I then put in a new white-outline rear sight blade and a bit of white on the front sight blade. All in all I'm very pleased with this revolver. No problems shooting into 2" at 25 yards with factory 125's either.

So now that I have it darn near perfect, I want to make it even better. Specifically, I'd like to remove a little of the minor cylinder play. There's a little more lateral play than I would like but short of getting a wider pawl to fit the cylinder slots there's not much I can do to change that. Since there's no evidence of lead shaving at the rear of the barrel, I'm not much worried about it. But there is a little bit of fore-and-aft  play that I was wondering how to address. Are there cylinder shims available to address this? I was hoping that I might close the cylinder-barrel gap in the process.

Olywa,

Are you checking play in the cylinder with the trigger pulled ot in the "at rest" position (hammer down and trigger released)?
My Ruger Security-Six has well over 30000 (yes, 5 zeros) through it and it has a tiny bit of play until you cock the hammer or start to pull the trigger. If I hold the trigger pulled after firing it is tight. Let that trigger go and it has a noticable (barely) amount of rotational play. As far as fore / aft play it has less than .0015 movement in it.
If yours has more than that you could call Ruger and ask them to make it like new again - it might cost you postage one way but that is all.

Thanks for the input. I don't notice much difference in play whether cocked or uncocked. I may be just a little too particular. I think I'll put the calipers to it and see what they say. Also thinking about picking up a new cylinder latch piece because the current one looks a little rounded and worn. That might address some of the rotational play.

I'd be thrilled with an old security six that I could shoot 2" with.   KN

That's 2" from a rest, mind you. I guess I am being a bit picky. I recently purchased a new SBH and it's cylinder is so snug that I'd like my old Security Six to snug up a little more as well.
