Cut down 17 hmr bbl
« on: April 10, 2005, 08:40:45 AM »
I have a 16" factory Contender bbl in 17hmr that I am abandoning as a carbine, but would like to have cut down to a 12" pistol bbl.  Can anyone recommend someone to cut and recrown this bbl?  Is it worth it, or should I just sell it and order a TC custom shop bbl for about $240?....thanks

Ed was going to charge me around $40 to cut down a 14" .17HM2 to 10" and put an 11 deg target crown on.

I'd see if I could just sell or trade the barrel.  I suppose that there's nothing wrong with cutting off a barrel, but you may find someone here or elsewhere that is in search of a 16" barrel, and that someone may even have a 12" barrel willing to trade.  You may save a couple of bucks and possibly some time.  Just my opinion.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

I'm curious as to why you're giving up on the carbine length.

I bought one last summer when Midway had them on sale, and mine shoots great.

I just had a 16 1/4 in 308 win made for my Encore pistol and use a rifle forearm. I like the long barrel for deer hunting. Throw a pistol grip on it and a bipod and give it a try might work for you. The longer forearm makes a better rest and exrta length to add bipod.

Mine came from Midway too, I think these were made exclusively for them.  I just don't care for the look and feel of the carbine with this short barrel.  I'm not positive, but I don't think I can put a pistol stock on this legally in WI, since the 16+" barrel makes it a rifle.  Anyway, it's now listed on eBay if anyone is interested.
