My dad has a marlin 357 that has killed over 15 whitetails.  All shots under 125 yards, most under 50.  He has always used 158gr  JSP at 1800fps.  It has always worked like a charm.  I've even shot a few while stalking thru cornfields, never had one get up, just flop around for a few minutes.

I use my Marlin 1894C 357 magnum more than any other gun for deer hunting. It works great if you keep it within it's limitations. I've killed a lot of deer with my 357 rifle, and 7 with my 357 Blackhawk.

My prefered load is a 158g Remington SP at 1700 fps in my rifle.

I've used Remington 158 gr SP's in mine and they worked fine. Don't try hollow points though, they aren't made to work at rifle velocities.
