Reloading the WSM's

I am considering a 270 wsm. I am just curious as weather they really deliver the advertised velocities? how about handloading are these velocities achievable or are the factory's using special powders?

There is an article in October issue of Shooting Illustrated..........he was using Barnes Triple shock 140 grain bullet, 65 grains of Reloader 22  Winchester case, CCI 250 Magnum primer, 3175 fps.not a maximum load according to Hodgon's loading data.............. I sure love my 270 WSM, haven't started reloading for it yet......... :D

I think my 270 wsm does not do as advertised with factory loads, about 3050 ft-lbs of energy.  My reloads have gotten about 3100 ft-lbs of energy.  I have not pushed the ceiling with my loads and have heard that Magpro is the powder to try if you want to do some drag racing.  Im quoting energy to eliminate the need to qualify all of the various bullet weights used.

I haven't fired any factory loads thru my .270 WSM, YET.  My reloads easily top the 3,100 fps. and I don't push the velocity edge either.  Great cartridge.  Sits right between the .270 Win. and the .270 Weatherby Magnum.  Lawdog

For everything you want to know about the various short mag cartridges, check out http://www.shortmags.org/shortmags/.  In my .270WSM, I have been able to achieve 3100 fps with the Nosler 140 gr Accubond and 65.0 gr of Vihtavuori N-165.  Not quite a maximum load according to Hornady, and Lyman's manual shows 65.0 gr with a 150 gr bullet, so it may be possible to do a little better.  What I like even more is my rifle's accuracy at velocities down to 2800 fps (55.0 gr Reloder 19) with 130 gr bullets on up to 3100 + with the 140's.  I have never tried to see how fast I could push a bullet out of mine.  I plan on keeping its' factory barrel for a few years, not to mention my fingers, eyes and ears.  I really don't think a deer can tell the difference between 3300 fps at the muzzle and 3100 fps.
