Help - What Am I Thinking!!!!
« on: March 21, 2005, 02:10:04 PM »
My experience with Ruger Revolvers over the past 10-15 years:

Bisley 41 Mag - Sold because the grip tore my hand up
RH 44 Mag - Did not have long, sold to buy something else
SRH 44Mag - Not very accurate, not enough sight adj. for loads I like, sold
GP100 - Most accurate Ruger I owned, sold
SS 22 Mag - Still have it, fun little gun, accuracy so-so
Bisley SS 22 lr - still have it, fun gun, accuray so-so

I am a big time Contender shooter and shoot them better off hand, off bags, with open sights or a scope way better than I ever shot the revolvers, which is why I sold the SRH and and GP100 this summer.  I also said I would never buy a Ruger again because I always seem to run out of sight adjustment and the so-so accuracy.

Now the problem is this 41 Mag Super Blackhawk Hunter I have been looking at.  My past experience tells me to not buy it.  I read posts about the base pins coming loose and that tells me not to buy it.  But dang, I love the 41 Mag and that gun does look pretty.  I have a  dealer that will order it for me for  $470 and Davidsons still has them in stock.  But I tell myself no more Rugers and convince myself of it.  Then I get to thinking that this could be the diamond in the ruff and could be the best Ruger I have ever had.

What to do, what to do.  Maybe  I  will  debate it long  enough and Davidsons will be out of them.  Then again, if I put my money down Tuesday I could be shooting it this weekend.

I  have  two 41 Mag barrels for the Contender, one with a scope and one without, both 10"ers.  There is another good reason not to get the Ruger, my I can get to a decision here yet.

It sounds like your standards are high enough that you could also be very disappointed by this weekend too.  Go with your gut and keep looking until you find a 41 that you really like.

Just buy a Freedom Arms in .41 Magnum. Might out shoot your TCs and is a revolver. Problem solved. Just do it.

Graybeard, I think you have the best answer.  I have been thinking about a freedom arms more and more after my past revolver experience.  But, with a kid going to college next year it is not an option right now.  What that Ruger would cost could be saved though and it would get me closer to the goal.

I really like Ruger revolvers, specially the single actions. But I must agree that their quality has fallen quite a bit over the years.
You get what you pay for. I pretty much expect when I buy a new single action Ruger, that the trigger will suck, the base pin will fall out, and I might have to get the proper front sight so it will shoot point of aim.
One benifit to all this, is its made me into a fairly decent gunsmith, because most of the areas where Rugers fall short are fixable.
Its kinda sad that Ruger cant or wont fix these things before they leave the factory, but I guess thats how they keep there costs down and stay competitive in todays economy. If you want one you dont have to make right, go with Freedom arms. Just my opinion.

As GB has said if you want assurance the gun you purchase with have TC accuracy FA is the only option in a single-action revolver.  Like you have also said 470 bucks is 1/3 a Field Grade FA. If you eate rice and beans for a while a FA wouldn’t be that far away.

GB beat me to the punch on that answer.  I know it's kind of boring getting the same EXPENSIVE answer.  After all of the guns that have been in my storehouse, I keep it simple - buy what you know is a winner.  The only fun gun is an accurate one and I've added to that, the fit and finish has to be pleasing as well; otherwise, I get discontent with the piece.  sounds like you have the same dilemna.

An update since I asked your opinion.  I had pretty much made up my mind not to get the Ruger and it seemed that you all agreed.  I went shooting today for the first time in a couple of weeks and as usual my rifles and Contender Pistols shot great and my Ruger 22 pistols were just so so at best.  This totally finished making up my mind, no Ruger for me.  I have been looking at the Freedom Arms more and will someday bite the bullet and get one.  It should not be a problem since I have more money than sense, of course that is not hard to do if you are short on the sense. :)

One strange thing I noticed is that a lot of the Freedom Arms guns have drift adjustable sights.  Seem strange to me that a gun that costs this big of $ needs a brass rod and hammer to adjust the sights.  I thought that crap was only on $400 lever guns.

FA sights

Check out the FA web site---they have several types of open sights, most are adjustable---the standard sight on field grade is a drifter---that does not come on the model 97 22lr because that is available only in Premier grade. Their express sight is the best around---I love mine. pg

keep your eyes open and you can find a used f.a. for $900 or even less.  i did, and have a few times since the first one i found and bought.  the rest i had to let go.  the one i have will do until i am ready to buy one new.    to my way of thinking,  one used f.a. is worth two junk rugers; easily.
