17HMR, Please talk me out of it!
« on: March 18, 2005, 04:45:59 PM »
Ok guys I need your help.  Been wanting a 17HMR for awile now and came across a Sportster at Sportsmans Warehouse for $150.  I need you guys to talk me out of it and tell me how it's a waste of money.  I need you to tell me how terribly they shoot and how inaccurate they are.  I need you to tell me how big and bulky and hard to carry they are as well as how complicated and delicate and prone to failure they are.  I also need to hear how expensive they are and that since they are so shiny and fancy that you are always afraid to have them with you in the truck and in the boat for when you need them.  I need someone to knock some sense into me so I shape up and get this silly notion out of my head.  What ever sense you can give me I am all ears.

I'd like to see you walk away from it....................directly to a Walmart and buy one for $104!!! That's their regular price on them when they have em there.....Unfortunetly, Sports South is out of them right now, so you can't even order one....That price of $150 is considerably more than they normally sell for anywhere I've seen em....Gander had them on sale for $110 recently....Our local Bimart sells them for $129.99 regular price and they go on sale for $110-$120 a few times each year....As much as I like the Sportster, If you have to pay that much for the one, I'd seriously look at the Marlin 917V for another $30, a heck of a good shooter if you're inclined to go for a repeater.

(notwithstanding quickdtoo's wise words)

Don't do it beavis! Big mistake.

When you take it to the range stuff like this ( http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=53650 ) will happen. Imagine buying a VW beetle and blowing the doors off a Porsche. It's just not right.

When you take it out in the field your shooting companions will be laughing like little kids when they shoot it. Can't have that happening.

You don't give the smaller game much chance either, it's just not fair.

Why would you buy one?

My 17HMR Sporter is one of my favorites.  It shoots as well if not better than most others on the market.  However, I don't think Sportmans is doing you any favors.  I purchased mine from CAL Ranch (in Idaho and Utah).  Walked out the door with gun, scope, ring and three boxes of shells for under $200.

My uncle purchase the Savage.  It shoots pretty well also but about every forth shot he has a flyer.  I don't know if you can blame the rifle. We have a blast picking off ground squirrels at 200 yds.  We only shoot our 22's at the close ones.  They are just not as fun as the 17HMR's.  The 17's are hard to put down once you got them in your hands.

I liked my Sporter so much that I purchased a 223 Ultra varmint the other day from Sportsmans.

I did get into WM's special order website and found the 22lr Sportster for around $100 but they did not list the 17HMR.  At that price I could get the 22 and send it in for the 17 barrel and have two guns for the other price.I haven't gone in  person to WM  yet to see if they can order it, I keep trying to talk myself out of it.

A 17hmr barrel will cost $98 once all shipping is paid....just a heads up for ya on that option. WM won't show the order number for the 17hmr Sportster, but you can go to their supplier's web site an get the order number there...problem is that it's not in stock right now....but that could change at any time. It's listed under H&R 1871 Long guns

They are horrible. You don't want one. Ammo is expensive, they shoot groups like shotgun patterns and just owning one gives you bad breath and foot odor. Is that good enough?  :-D

I could be wrong but I think their price is now $124 on the .17 caliber sportsters.  I tried to order one about a week ago and was given that price and came home to check on the sportsouth site to find that their list price is now about $30 higher for the 17 hmr and m2 than for the 22 cal models.  Perhaps due to the fact that both of the 17s have bull barrels.

Jason, could very well be! I'm seeing price increases everytime a new rifle comes in to the store where I buy most of my new H&R and Marlin rifles. They just got in 2 new Marlins, a 917V and a 917VS, the VS was $270 a year ago when I bought mine, now it's $288, the V was $180 a year ago, now it's $190....they got a 204 Ruger Handi in a couple months ago, it is priced at $200, mine was $190 when I bought it last October!  It doesn't surprise me at all that WM has raised their prices since the special order cat was published. FWIW, the 17M2 Sportster that is on the shelf at Bimart is marked $129.99, same for the last 17hmr they had in stock which has been a while...

Well for what my 2-cents is worth, I love the 17HMR to death   It is an incredibily fast and accurate round that, for the type, has no equal. Only other type that even comes close is the 22 WMR Maxi Mag-V. Still I would rather have the 17. Like the others said thought, you could find a better price.

I like mine more every day. Finding this site helped me clear up a lot of questions, and makes me want to ask more.
I nearly sold my Sportster in a moment of weakness. Good thing I didn't , they seem to be out of stock right now.

In fact, I read such good things about the accuracy of the 223 NEF that I ordered a Survivor 223. It should be in at the end of the week. (From the big store that begins with a "W".)

Coyotes, beware!

Sports South shows the 17hmr Sportster in stock, so now would be the time to order one from Walmart!!!

How do you order one from Walmart? I brought the Sports South item number in (89133) but they told me they could only get what was listed in either the paper catalog or the online special order page. The 17hmr and 17hm2 are not listed in either place as far as I can see.

The only reason not to buy one is.........your .22 will get dusty, I haven't touched mine since I got the NEF .17HMR. This gun is just too much fun.

hello all and good evening to you, this is my first post on this fantastic forum and i have shared all your pain with these horrible little forsaken rifles. My first day i took it to my uncles farm shot i shot cirlces around his 3k plus 17/223 bench gun and my sportster was 200 with scope. Needless to say he was very jealous and a little embarased. But they are great guns the best for the money and i whole heartedly trecomend them.
Good shooting,
                       Matt

Hi Matt, I'm sorry to be late in responding, I just finished moving my daughter yesterday, she has moved back to the East Coast from California to pursue her Master's degree in (Christian Family?) Counseling and the shinglers were here bright and early today (yeah!! some work is finally being done on the addition from hell !!!), the electrician (?), is this guy licensed?, is he dangerous?, showed up and worked from 6PM to 7PM. I then left for a town committee meeting to argue with the Selectmen. The committee chair will be out of town for the Town Meeting and I as Vice-Chair will have to present and argue for our article.
I wanted to try to get some shooting in this week but they changed the keys at the club and the range on 4/1 and I forgot to send in my dues for this year, so, NO KEYS!! I sent a check out today, I should have my new keys in a week or so...
In a week or so I am having a bone chip removed from my elbow, an outpatient operation but with a general so I won't be able to drive myself home, what a pain in the elbow/butt. I hope it will improve my golf swing and allow me to start lifting again, as well as helping in my traditional archery, and I want to scuba dive more this year, and fish, and perhaps go skydiving with my beloved daughter Jennifer...I will really try to get into it more fully in a PM or e-mail tomorrow...Still you buddy (I hope), MSP Ret....<><.... 8)

Did someone tell me retirement was relaxing and fun??? I'd like to catch that guy in a dark alley now that I don't wear a badge (which for years has restrained me from a true expression of my repressed feelings!!) and really let him know just how I feel about him lying to me like that!!!! :-D
