7mm or 240 Copper Hollow point
« on: June 08, 2005, 11:31:28 AM »
I'll be hunting in Maine this September and I'm not sure which rifle to use. I have a TC Encore 7mm Rem Mag shooting 175 gr bullet and a TC White Mtn carbine, both scoped, shooting 240 gr Hornady XTP hollow point in Hornady Sabot with 90 gr Pyrodex. I've taken 240#+ hogs with both. The 240 XTP totaly blew up in the hog and the hog never moved an inch from where it was hit. My concern is which will expend all it's energy inside the bear and dispatch it as quickly and cleanly as possible.

Will you be hunting over bait?  If so, I would think the muzzleloader might be a better choice due to its reduced velocity and larger bullet size.  However, if you will be moving around stalking you might consider using the 7mm with a bonded-type bullet.  Muzzleloader is a pain in the rain, so maybe you could take both barrels and make a "game-day" decision. :)  Best of luck!

Hey Pruts thanks for the reply. Yes I'll be over bait. My concern is about the 7mm 175 grain passing through. The 240 xtp copper hollow point makes a bigger hole but will it penetrate and hold enough together considering the anatomy of the bear? I'm a believer in one shot one kill and don't want to break my unbroken streak.

Personally I would use a bow.  As I've posted before, shooting a bear over bait with a rifle is like killing a cow eating a bucket of grain.  Other than that, a muzzleloader would be my only other choice.

he may not be an archer buckskin.  and also alot of guys may not want to try with a bow for their first bear.  my first bear will be with a bow....but i certainly dont think im everybody.  i dont look at it as any less sport be it by rifle, muzzleloader, bow or whatever.....cuz when one starts choosing which method is "more sporting"....they open up the can of worms as to whats acceptable as well.  and one thing the sport of hunting does not need is division.

immore bowhunter than rifle hunter myself....but i consider those who hunt with rifle or shotgun more often to still be my brothers in the sport of hunting etc....

believe it or not there are folks who will rip on someone for bear hunting over bait but think its totally different to call in a turkey within shotgun distance.  way i see it...we are both trickin game into getting into effective range to kill the animal.

i challenged his fellow to try and get his bear bait set up to get bears in daylight......his reply was...he wont because he thinks bear hunting over bait is "not real hunting"....lol  no use arguing with that guy....cuz ive sat in many a blind and shot many an animal out of them by calling, baiting, ambushing.  ive also stalked many game animals still hunting or spot and stalk.  its all fun and its all got its challenging moments......and virtually every acceptable by law method has its percentage of failure involved....

ok just hopped off my soap-box... :-D

I certainly did not intend to belittle this method of hunting.  As a matter of fact my brother who does not bow hunt will be using a rifle on our bear hunt this fall to Canada.  Although I'm trying to convince him to use my Encore muzzle loader.  No, what I was trying to say is that he will blow the hell out of his hide with a 338 RUM and that I will not be very rewarding of an experience.  That is my opinion, and only an opinion.  He may be on cloud 9 after knocking his bear over with the 338.
