NY Hunter;

  Sorry about the slow answer....been busy with other things...

  Grandson married to his "main squeeze" from back home (here in our home village ) on Easter Sunday...today they are headed back to Lejeune.

         He recently got a promotion to L/cpl and a " mass recognition ", I believe he called it,before the formed up battalion.
  That recognition was for classes he gave to 30 Navy Corpsmen that were headed to Iraq. He taught them all weapons systems, concentrating on the .50 cal MG...why to Corpsmen...I don't know..
 
  He is attatched to 22nd MEU...Marine Expeditionary Unit, (SOC)...special operations capable...

   He was "selected" by the unit commander to be their weapons specialist when they deploy to Afghanistan this fall...

  Guess they are going "varmint hunting"....maybe his unit will get Bin Laden after all...

Glad to hear your grandson is doing well. I'd certainly be apprehensive bout my kids over there in that crap. But I guess somebody has got to do it. God bless all of them.

Hope he has luck varmint hunting. That 'ol chuck has been rather elusive now hasn't he?  :)  :D

0311 is a Marine infantryman...every Marine is a rifleman.

That Mass recognition most likely was a meritorious Mast, short for going before the Mast  or Capitans mast, left over from the old days when Marines served on sailing ships.  In those days you went before the Mast or had Capitans Mast to be commend or  to get flogged.   I believe the Navy now only  uses the term Capitans mast to get flogged.

You can be very proud of your Grandson for getting a Meritorious Mast. In 7 years I managed to get one.

From a Corpsman's point of view. EVERY Corpsman should know as much about each weapon as possible. I could operate the M-2, M-60, 60mm mortor, 81mm mortor not to mention the small arms. when the fecal matter hits the fan that is not the time to try figure out how a weapon works. Your life and the lives of your Marines may well depend on your ability not only as a Corpsman, but as a Marine. In a firefight you better know how to shoot back. Corpsman need to know how to be an RTO if needed and they need to know tactics to be able to lead if needed. There is a lot more to it than slapping a dressing on someone. Semper Fi :wink:

   Thanks for clarifying the term...having been "Army", I wasn't familiar with the term, to say nothing about the proper spelling !

  I recall the term about "every Marine a rifleman"...the Army used the term "every soldier is an infantryman first"..

  Don't know how true this is in today's Army....
    Guess I'm just old fashioned, but I truly believe the Army was more effective when the men and women served in different units doing appropriate tasks..

  Fishman;
         I know some folks would be apprehensive about their sons/g-sons going into direct action against such a barbarous enemy as we presently have...but in this world-wide war; as in WW2...if we don't stop them there; we will have to do it here.
  Then too; we cannot discount the "warrior spirit" that many young men have...yet some I've seen around my home area don't even have a clue to "warrior spirit"....
   Josh has been "weapons trained all his life, I saw to it that he had a couple years training under an exceptional martial arts Sensai and he has long ago, at about 5yrs age, accepted Christ as his savior.
   In the Marine Corps he has qualified expert with "possibles" at 300 & 500 yards in rapid fire. One more belt and he becomes a qualified MC instructor in martial arts.
  He is training strenuously right now, spending much time in the field.
   I believe he is eminently qualified to face the "baddest of the barbarians"...now prayer is our weapon back home..

   I wasn't sure that they (the brass) in today's "politically correct" age would have the Corpsmen taking extra weapons training..
   I certainly can see the potential need for it, and agree with such weapons training...but with people of the ilk of Kennedy & Clinton in the Senate...they may have had a different view of Corpsmen being accomplished with weapons..
    ...But then of course, the Marines are not as PC as some other branches..
    I too ask God to put his hedge of protection around our troops...

It probably wasnt PC when I was in. Corpsman are "non-combatants" I can remember the pictures of Corpsman in the hall ways at Corps School that were KIA. I thought to my self non-combatants my ass! Some of the Corpsman were lazy and didnt want to do much in the field. they would bring a book or sleep in the field ambulance until someone got hurt. Most of the grunts didnt care for those guys. a lot of the other Corpsman didnt care for them either. I made it a point to get in to the everyday training and learn everything I could. I was able to call in air strikes and art. I always figured things like that might come in handy someday. I was at Quantico right out of Corps School. I spent a lot of time at the Basic School and with Enlisted Instructors where I got of a lot of weapons experience. I spent time at Comm Officers school and learned field comm. And was lucky enough to get to Scout Sniper School. In the Fleet it all paid off. It was guys like your Grandson that taught me the things that would save my life. I just pray that todays Corpsman have not become PC. I hope they remain hard core Devil Docs.

  I always figured that medics (Army term) and Corpsmen should be weapons trained and trained well...because they may have to use whatever weapon they can scarf up in a dire situation !

Ironglow, I was watching a show on the military channel last week, a "Marine  Expeditionary Unit" (not sure which one, it was from Camp Lejeune though) was doing their 9 month "work up" for deployment. There was a Navy Corpsman that was "qualifying" with an M-16. There was a Lieutenant that said the corpsman had to score at last the minimum score with the M-16 or he wouldn't be allowed to deploy with the Marines. He qualified by one point and went with MEU for the work up!

   That was probably the 22nd MEU..rthe one my g-son is assigned to.
 
  They are the one that is in intensive workup and training at LeJeune right now..
