Opening day ends in a bang!!
« on: April 09, 2005, 12:30:07 PM »
Today was the opening day of spring gobbler here in Va. and a friend and I were in the woods before daylight.
After a few soft tree yelps i had three birds gobblin.....We heard one fly down.
After talking back and forth with one of them for a few minutes....he decided to come on in.
My gun was a Partner w/28inch full choke barrel.....3inch win. turkeyload no.6
I have patterned the barrel and it holds good turkey patterns out to about 40yards
i shot this bird at about 30yrds.

He weighed 20pounds 11ounces......10inch beard and one inch spurs.

What a great way to start the season!!!

Thanks Brett!!
This was accutly the first bird ive taken in a couple years....I mostly just go and call for friends. but this one just would nt give my buddy a chance...and looked to good to pass on.

You got my handle right....I build a few box-n-paddle, and box-n-striker calls each year.
nothin really fancy, just good (in the woods) calls.

I have a soon to be six year old daughter who is chomping at the bit to go turkey hunting for real.  We have a turkey hunting game on our computer that she loves to play. She is also looking forward to going squirrel hunting with the old man.  She doesn't know it yet but I bought her a stainless .22/.410 Rossi youth matched pair that she will be getting for her birthday on May 6th.  It may be a while yet before she is ready for turkey but with plenty of practice over the summer I hope that she will be ready for squirrel season in the fall.
